BA has extended status for some (not all) expecting a mid-year drop

British Airways appears to have extended elite status for some people who were due to lose it part-way through the 1st April 2025 to 31st March 2026 membership year.

This includes my wife and I which is good news if it sticks.

Let’s take a closer look.

British Airways extends status

Back in February 2024, when British Airways announced the moved to fixed membership years (1st April to 31st March), some people were NOT given a 31st March end date for their current status.

This was done out of fairness to those who had just earned status. It wasn’t perfect but it helped.

Here’s an example:

  • Imagine that you earned Gold during a membership year which ended on 8th October 2024
  • Your Gold status was due to expire on 30th November 2025
  • When the new membership year system was announced, it was assumed that this Gold period would be shortened with status ending on 30th April 2025

A few days after the original announcement, BA changed its T&C to clarify that:

Any existing status valid beyond 31 March 2025 will continue for the full duration.

This meant that everyone would get the ‘rest of their current year plus the full following year’ to benefit from their status.

It wasn’t the perfect solution. Your ‘soft landing’ period was still reduced. In the example above, even though British Airways allowed you to keep your Gold status until 30th November 2025, your soft landing to Silver – assuming you didn’t requalify, and assuming soft landings continue – would only last until 30th April 2026 and not 30th November 2026.

What has changed?

Both my wife and I were impacted by this.

My status was due to end on 30th November 2025. My wife’s was due to end on 30th September 2025.

However, looking at my British Airways Club membership card:

…. my Gold status will now run to 30th April 2026. My wife’s account shows the same. I’ve gained an extra five months, she has gained an extra seven months.

British Airways seems to have decided that dropping some members down a tier during the new fixed membership period doesn’t make sense.

If your British Airways Club status was due to expire mid-year, take a look at your BA account. You may be pleasantly surprised. However, looking at the comments below, it seems 50/50 as to whether you were extended.

  • Dom says:

Ok. Probably not fully understanding these changes. My silver status has been extended to 31 March 2026. That’s fine. But all my tier points were reset, so as far as working toward retaining or going up in status, I have been robbed of 6 months. I’m not particularly happy about. I thought I’d read somewhere about them converting the tier points earned mid membership year.

  • Wing it one world says:

I’m currently in Hawai though the weather is. Clearly not as good as Uk 🇬🇧 at present. Anyhow I have now received all
    My points so far.
Booked and paid for before 01/03 fly 28th March. registered 31/3 old tier points,
Return 31/3 points registered in new points 140/2200 40/629 15.715 rate this got me to over 6000 tier points yet still no voucher issued. 2/4 trip to jersey old new 40/ 534 rate 13.35 how is everyone else doing with the club, though on my flight out it was still excutive club as per the BA script. Might not have reached LGW yet lol

    • SalisburyGaz says:

I flew to MAD on 31st March, had all my points reset to 0 on 1st April, MAD flight credited on 2nd April under new system, 158 tier points yet my total points remain at 0? My lifetime total got adjusted on 2nd to reflect the new system too and my card end is 30th April ’26.

  • Ian says:

    Mine hasn’t been extended.

So sadly the article is wrong.

Maybe you can ask the press office for a statement?

    • Terry Butcher says:

Even after refreshing the screen several times – mine has not been extended either. Perhaps this is hit and miss?

  • NigelthePensioner says:

This was how I understood it would work. We both had 8th Sept anniversary dates. By double counting and adding tier points earned from 1st April 24 to 8th Sept 24, to the points earned from 9th Sept 24 to 31st March 25, you would have your old exec club tier point balance which if over 1500 gives you gold tier from 1st April 25 to 31st March 26. Card ends 30th April 26.
We flew QR x 2 on 31st March! 4400 tier points each wasted! As we booked before the changes were announced I will ask these people if it can be allowed as we would clearly have flown a day later knowing this!!

  • Dave says:

Mine is still showing 31st Dec 25

  • hugo r says:

My wife’s silver account status has been extended from Dec 25 card expiry date to April 26

Very bizarre as my gold account has not been extended and remains as Dec 25 as the card expiry date

(Tier point collection dates are the same for both accounts as we got status at the same time)

How come my wife has been extended (which is great) and mine not ???

  • Jim Chapman says:

    Mine hasn’t been extended either😕.

  • Matty says:

I did three flights last weekend and should have received 290 TPs. They credited under the new system, backdated, on Wednesday. I needed 280 to requalify for Gold. My card expiry is still showing as 30 June 2025. How long should I leave it before contacting BA?

    • Tracey says:

I have the same. Flight is showing on my transactions, but my end date still remains at June 2025.

    • Phillip says:

I wouldn’t wait before calling BA. I had an issue a few years back when something similar happened and it took months to resolve. Flag it ASAP.
