BA has extended status for some (not all) expecting a mid-year drop

British Airways appears to have extended elite status for some people who were due to lose it part-way through the 1st April 2025 to 31st March 2026 membership year.

This includes my wife and I which is good news if it sticks.

Let’s take a closer look.

British Airways extends status

Back in February 2024, when British Airways announced the moved to fixed membership years (1st April to 31st March), some people were NOT given a 31st March end date for their current status.

This was done out of fairness to those who had just earned status. It wasn’t perfect but it helped.

Here’s an example:

  • Imagine that you earned Gold during a membership year which ended on 8th October 2024
  • Your Gold status was due to expire on 30th November 2025
  • When the new membership year system was announced, it was assumed that this Gold period would be shortened with status ending on 30th April 2025

A few days after the original announcement, BA changed its T&C to clarify that:

Any existing status valid beyond 31 March 2025 will continue for the full duration.

This meant that everyone would get the ‘rest of their current year plus the full following year’ to benefit from their status.

It wasn’t the perfect solution. Your ‘soft landing’ period was still reduced. In the example above, even though British Airways allowed you to keep your Gold status until 30th November 2025, your soft landing to Silver – assuming you didn’t requalify, and assuming soft landings continue – would only last until 30th April 2026 and not 30th November 2026.

What has changed?

Both my wife and I were impacted by this.

My status was due to end on 30th November 2025. My wife’s was due to end on 30th September 2025.

However, looking at my British Airways Club membership card:

…. my Gold status will now run to 30th April 2026. My wife’s account shows the same. I’ve gained an extra five months, she has gained an extra seven months.

British Airways seems to have decided that dropping some members down a tier during the new fixed membership period doesn’t make sense.

If your British Airways Club status was due to expire mid-year, take a look at your BA account. You may be pleasantly surprised. However, looking at the comments below, it seems 50/50 as to whether you were extended.

No extension for here either me or the SO. Still showing Gold card valid until Nov 25 & Sep 25 respectively. It’s teh same on both the App and the web front end.

Unless of course BA IT systems are so awful that they intended but failed to extend everyone.

As someone else said… a RRFU.

  • Nectar Collector says:

@Rob – can you absolutely confirm that you didn’t accumulate more than 1500 TPs between 1 April 24 and 31 March 25? If you did, then you requalified for Gold quite correctly under the transition rules and should have an expiry date of April 26. If you didn’t, then I’m really annoyed with BA and it’s outrageous that they have not applied the transition rules as they published them and therefore misled people into taking additional trips to top up status unnecessarily.

    • Rob says:

Trust me, I know the rules 🙂

        Hi Rob
I was a January 8th TP year end earned gold until Feb 2026 requalified for gold after TP adjustment which should have taken me to April 2026 and this is reflected in my app (TP collection end 31 March gold until 30 April 2026) and then hopefully soft landing to silver til Feb 2027-have this in writing from BA as confirmation before I embarked on requalifying. Says 19k points needed to retain Gold. Sound right? I thought that was meant to happen. My wife was also January before changes and she is now Silver with card expiry Feb 2026 and to year end 31 March 2026. I think that’s right and can’t see any extra time added.

You don’t need any tier points for gifted gold 😁

  • Panda Mick says:

This IT sh**nanigans makes Alex Cruz’s tenure look quite benign….

  • AllieI says:

Didn’t quite make enough tier points by 31March to retain gold (was about 200 short) so due to drop 31 November, no extension either in app or web account. So seems like it’s completely inconsistent as to how this has been applied – unless there’s another criteria that isn’t easy to see (number of years gold held for maybe?).

    • Phineas Campbell says:

What does your app say? Is there ‘Retain Silver’ on it?
I am in a similar position, I am not sure what will happen once the card expires, do go down a level or hopefully retain Silver

  • Lauryn says:

Opposite for me. I requalified for gold with enough points between my old start (July) and new end (April) but my gold renewal end date is now capped at April even though in old system I would have had it until July..

  • Skywalker says:

My grey BAC status hasn’t been extended and I’m actually cool with that because I have plans that involve other airlines/alliances next year.

    • Sudz74 says:

Same. Was initially disappointed but I was definitely guilty of letting the tail wag the dog in the past so (convincing myself to be) pleased to be free of that.
