Claim is made by or ìn the name of the passenger.

Claim with BA has to be for % of avios back and % of cash back. Reimbursement in those, respectively.

You can only claim cash value of avios if you end up having to MCOL them and yes in that cse their own rack rate selling price is fine.

Cash amounts have to have true taxes like APD and true airport charges deducted from them on the leg downgraded, before the % reimbursement you get back is calculated. Be very careful as true taxes are likely a very big part of cash paid as I think LHR MUC is an RFS route but if it was MUC LHR true taxes on that leg should have been much less. Even so the cash and avios reimbursed entitled to would be 30% of not much as it’s a shorter route. (75% is long haul %).

I’d suggest you run the numbers on

1. what you technically are entitled to receive back

2. value if you were offered the difference between C cost and Y cost back, by BA

3. Is, say, 10,000 avios, if BA were to respond by
offering that, actually worth more than either of the above. If not then what amount of avios would be.

As it’s shorthaul the results of the above might not be what you expect. But essential to know what to ask for in your, sorry I mean your son’s, nice note to BA.

If he got booted from the lounge too then enclose his coffee/snack/drink receipt just in case they’re feeling kind.

Whichever alternative you choose to ask for, keep it short and nice for best results.
