Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios 2 Upgrade Vouchers & 3 Pax – Best way to book?

  • 4 posts

    I have 2 Barclays upgrade vouchers to use as part of a reward flights purchase for 3 CW seats LHR to LAX return. If I understand the voucher rules correctly then I have 2 options:

    A. 2 x return seats use 1 voucher each, 1 x return seat does not use a voucher

    B. 2 x outbound seats combined use 1 voucher, 1 x return seat uses 1 voucher, 2 x inbound seats do not use a voucher.

    If option A, will I need to wait until the inbound leg availability is released before I can book the 2 x returns using a voucher, but could book 2 x single seats with no voucher (o/b & i/b legs for the same passenger) as soon as each are available? And for option B I could book the 2 x outbounds using a voucher as soon as they are available, but will need to wait for the inbound availability before booking the 1 x return (using voucher) and the 2 x inbounds (not using voucher)?

    I am trying to work out the best plan to book before available seats disappear. Whichever option I go for I will need to wait for the inbound leg to be released before I can complete the booking for all passengers.

    Did I understand correctly. Is there a better way?

    Is this for 2 adults, and 1 child?

    If so, I would use one voucher to book one adult and the child outbound, and the second voucher to book the other adult outbound, and then call up to book the inbound for the 2nd adult when the seat becomes available.

    You can also then book the first adult and child inbound (at full avios price).

    You’ll end up with 4 separate PNR’s, so 4 sets of cancellation fees, but I think it’s the best way to book, especially if the 3rd person is a child.

    Hi. Thanks for replying. No, its for 3 adults. Does the same still apply? Can I use 1 voucher for 2 x adults outbound, and the other voucher for 1 x adult outbound, and then call and add the inbound to voucher 2 when it becomes available (along with the other 2 inbounds at full price). Is this allowed?

    No worries. The same would apply even for 3 adults, I only asked if the 3rd was a child, because they can’t use a voucher on their own, or be booked separately (unless calling and ‘linking’ the bookings).

    I think this way is the least complicated. If you booked the other way, then you would possibly have 6 separate PNR’s, as it’s not always easy to use two vouchers in one booking.

    If you get an agent saying that you can’t add the inbound to the voucher, then HUACA (hang up and call again), until you get an agent that will do it.

    Also, before you book anything, just double check that using either method doesn’t cost more avios that the other. I don’t know the avios required for CW/PE to/from LAX peak/off peak off the top of my head, but for a destination I do know (NYC), then it was the same amount when I worked it out off peak (didn’t calculate peak)

    Thank you for the explanation. Sorry for my misunderstanding, when you say checking one method doesn’t cost more Avios than the other, do you mean the different combinations of seats I could buy? If so, I think its the same with either method….

    LHR to LAX in WT+ is 47.5k off peak/67.5k peak, CW is 90k off peak/100k peak. Assuming I travel in peak dates:

    2 outbound one voucher = 67.5k x 2 = 135k
    1 return one voucher = 67.5k x 2 = 135k
    2 inbound 0 voucher = 100k x 2 = 200k
    TOTAL = 470K

    2 return 2 vouchers = 67.5k x 4 = 270k
    1 return 0 voucher = 100k x 2 = 200k
    TOTAL = 470k
