Forums Payment cards American Express 241 companion vouchers and cancelling cards

  • 7 posts

    Hi, Looking for some advice!

This will be my first time using a companion voucher earned by spending £10,000 in a year on my British Airways premium, AMEX card. My card is due to renewal on the 26th of April, as the fees are no longer prorated, I’m thinking of cancelling the card or at least downgrading it.

I would like to use my voucher for a trip at the end of March/beginning of April 2025 however, I wondered whether cancelling the card after booking it on the same premium AMEX would cause any issues when Travelling?

I also spoke to an agent at British Airways executive club, who told me that I was able to book my outbound flight online and make adjustments by adding on the inbound flight for free over the phone when they become available roughly 355 days in advance, has anybody done this and can share any experience? Or also any experience about adding hotels on with BA to make it in at ATOL package?

    Where’s the ‘FFS’ emoji?

Hi Scott, I am looking for up to date advice as I have gone through the other forums and can’t find a definitive answer and most are out of date now (2 yrs plus). But if I’m wrong and you know of one I should read happy for you to link me in a comment. Would be more helpful than your ‘FFS’ emoji comment.

These questions come up every few days, please see here for some basics – https://www.headforpoints.com/2024/01/03/how-do-british-airways-american-express-2-4-1-vouchers-work-2/

In terms of booking the return flight – see this https://www.headforpoints.com/forums/topic/booking-return-leg-with-companion-voucher/

    All of which are recent.

I don’t believe there is any route to adding a hotel to the booking.

You might also want to adjust your booking strategy depending on where you want to go, especially as it sounds like your trip will overlap next year’s Easter holidays.

Noted thanks. I spoke to BA today who let me know their off peak dates in April next year (basically first two weeks) so going to try for these. Luckily I had a helpful call handler so fingers crossed for a similar experience in April.

Thankful for posts above as didn’t realise until now that open jaw may be an option.

I wouldn’t rely on that, they don’t release the peak dates until well into the current year. The call handler also may not be aware of UK school holiday dates – they run roughly from the end of March to the end of April next year, and BA will make the vast majority of those dates peak, apart from the odd Tuesday and Wednesday. Easter weekend is around April 21st, so peak will run until at least then. You can do a bit of a comparison by looking at the equivalent dates for this year.

Thanks will take note. Although call handler said they have the off peak calendar for this year and did specify the few days of which I think was 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 8th of April so hopefully this will remain true. Luckily my dates can be reasonably flexible.

Trying to get some confidence that if I downgraded to the standard I could still use the premium 241 (ie in club) then I would have a lot more flexibility as I could wait until May or June.

Really appreciate all your advice though, so thanks for your helpful comments!

That’s not the first 2 weeks! Interesting that they can lay hands on the calendar in January but they make customers wait several months.

Once the voucher is in your account it stays there – well there’s no verified evidence to the contrary as yet. Again, documented many times in the links posted above.

Not looking to get into an argument but those dates fall in the first two weeks, admitted not all days.

But yes I’m not sure who I spoke to but she was extremely helpful telling me about getting extra points via ba shopping online etc too. Maybe if there’s dates in the future you wish to book might be worth giving a call as it was intimated to me that they had a calendar of off peak dates for the whole year available. Just obviously you can’t book until just under a year in advance!

    Thanks again.
