Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Executive Club 787-9 Club World seat help

    Hi everyone,

My partner and I are flying from London to Tokyo in a 787-9, which still has the old yin-yang Club World layout.

I need help deciding whether to pay for seats now or risk the T-7 race as a Bronze member.

The flight out is in late October and the flight back is in mid-November.

ALL of the window pairs are already gone, so the best option looks to be 6E and 6F – but this would cost c.£450 in total, and I’m not sure whether that’s worth it?

Would you swallow the cost to secure the seats now or risk it and just wait until 7 days before the flight?

Grateful for your thoughts and input!

    I would risk it.

And I can’t stop myself spending money unnecessarily.

The only reason I might pay is because of a perception it might reduce the downgrade chance but m not convinced it makes much difference.

+1. With all the window pairs gone, there’s no way I’d attach £450 of value to secure the remaining choices. I wouldn’t pay £450 for a window pair either, mind, but for the remaining choices I don’t think I’d pay anything more than the most trivial amount.

Not usually worth it in my opinion. I’m bronze and wait until T-7 for my seats, including to/from Tokyo, Shanghai, etc.

What is worth doing is watching for first class to become available on your route, which is a similar cost (e.g., this summer I paid £70pp to upgrade the outbound, but got 50,000 Avios in total back because no RFS for first), includes seat selection, and does sometimes pop up for Tokyo.

also have a flight on a 787-9 in feb…currently in 12a and b. Are we better off in 13a and b? first time in CW. thanks

Better for the A seat. Worse for the B seat.

The cabin crew love banging in to B seats as they come through the curtain however they tend not to come through the curtain that much.

7B and 7K are awful for this reason.

So for 12 vs 13, it’s really a case of whether the window seat occupant can step over people’s legs with ease. If you are both 6 foot 4” and fit then I’d maybe go 12.

If you are 80 years old then 13 every time.

Thanks, I’m 6ft but partner 5ft2 and she won’t want to fly backwards…but she will be fine climbing over me… what I can’t get my head around is if she is in 12a would she be climbing over my legs in 12b or the person in 13b? If the former then that’s obviously fine. Thanks again

Just booked 7A and 13K for return from HKG in December. 13A already booked and 7K is a crew rest seat.

Agent on phone – the original HKG flight was cancelled – couldn’t get my Golden Sparrow account number to work, so gave me the reservation complimentary!

It is A that faces backwards.

    B is forwards.

    12A climbs over 13B.

Best seat map is this one. The white on the seats represents the antimacassars:

And Mr MacKinnon shows a happy couple can survive without sitting next to each other.

Direct aisle access + privacy/quiet beats “how was your breakfast darling” any day of the week!

Ha! Thanks, hadn’t even spotted I was looking at the direction back to front! Agree we don’t need to hold hands on the whole flight 🙂 but think we would prefer a and b as also supposedly flying CS on the outbound and cathay business on an internal Asia flight. Thanks for help

Thanks for your feedback everyone – think I’ll risk it! Wish me luck 😆
