Hello
I’m looking at flying 1 way from Male – KL around January 15th. It’s my wife and I.
There is only 1 available seat on Malaysia Airlines for 11k Avios & £56
Should I book this 1 seat and then a normal cash fare for £156 or just book 2 cash fares at £156 x 2.
My query is could a reward seat get cancelled etc and leave 1 of us stranded. Thanks ☺️
£156 is much better value than the avios price, so I would go with that.
My take is slightly different, I would say it depends on the depth of OP’s pockets today.
11k Avios + £56 is (1p Avios valuation (£110 + £56)) is £166
The flight cash price is £156 – £10 less – so the cash price is somewhat better, but not by much.
• If cash rich/Avios poor, in this instance I would save the Avios for another day for a better value flight.
• If Avios rich/cash poor, then the Avios price is not so unreasonable and I would use Avios.
@dan87 to answer your other question, if booked separately, then either ticket could be cancelled and leave the other stranded, not just the reward one.
If you are concerned with this aspect then do not book separate tickets at all, always book together.
Thank you ☺️
Makes sense to save the avios given the value and risk it 2 separate bookings 👍🏼
£10 difference if 1p per Avios. I would definitely get one at least the 1x available with Avios that you can cancel if necessary.
Note that AirAsia fly this route and sometimes for peanuts.
Does anyone know if MAS ever releases more than 1 business class seat for redemptions? I came across this problem earlier in the year, but unclear if there may be dates (or additional seats closer to departure) which are released. Couldn’t see more than 1 business seat on any of the dates I checked. Thanks.

MH you mean?
Found the same issue when trying to find PVG down to KL. I searched everyday for months and only 1 business class released and 1 economy so didnt even work for a family of 3. Just did LCC in the end.
Avios ticket is also refundable/changeable vs cash ticket. I know people here don’t care, but since the pandemic I will never ever buy anything travel-related as non-refundable unless the travel is imminent. Another disaster can be just around the corner and insurance policies have been tightened.

I’ve seen 4+ J seats on routes from Japan, but 2-3 months in advance.
