Amex blocking Applications to cards you have held before???

Our system shows that you have previously submitted an application for this Card. We have therefore cancelled this duplicate application.
If you have not yet received a decision for your original application, it is still being processed. We will send you an email or note in the post within the next ten days to advise you of the final decision.
So I definitely haven’t got a pending application for this card. In fact I cancelled the same one maybe 6-8 months ago. Is this the start of Amex clamping down on churning, so I can’t even apply for a card I have held before?
I haven’t applied for any cards for roughly 6 months. If it’s relevant I’m one of these people that has also had referrals removed from my account.

This has happened to me twice before. It is very unlikely to have been something to do with you. This is an acknowledged Amex problem. Phone them up and speak to someone in Brighton. The overseas team do not seem to know what the problem is and may tell you to wait 3 months but the problem will still be there. Amex have to go into your profile and reset something manually and this will take about a week. Don’t take no for an answer if they try to fob you off. Raise a complaint if necessary. Good luck.
