Just offered 12k points for £1k spend within 3 months. Better than nothing
Just asked if there was any retention offers, they said none!
Just for data I’ve held the Gold card for 7 months with around 2.5k spend per month. I didn’t receive a welcome bonus initially as I held an amex Marriott card when signing up.
I still have the Marriott card, maybe that’s why I didn’t get offered a retention offer…who knows?
@Killak – can you offer any good reason why Amex might wish to offer you any retention bonus after just seven months of free card membership?
I was hoping that since I didn’t receive a sign up bonus initially, and since Ive had the card for 7 months now and spent quite consistently that they may try to keep me via a retention bonus.
I did get the sign up bonus for the Marriott card, albeit that was 3+ years ago…so thought I’m due a little bonus but read they don’t offer retention offers on the Marriott card so thought I’d try my luck with the gold!
They didn’t offer me so hey ho!
If you wanted a sign up bonus you should have taken the Platinum Card.
My Gold card is up for renewal next month. I have spent £28k so far and asked them on chat. They said there are no retention offers for me.
1st year of Gold has finished after roughly ~£2k a month spend. I’m not getting any use out of Deliveroo etc so asked on chat and was only offered a downgrade or cancellation.
The expected entitlement of a retention bonus on this thread recently is staggering, much to the fault of Amex may I add, who have done themselves no favours whatsoever and are partly responsible for this sense of entitlement.
Like Bloxorus back in July, I was offered 12,000 MR for £1k spent in the next 3 months as my gold renews this week.

It’s just examples of people giving their experience after asking and hoping. Where’s the entitlement?

You were eligible for Platinum or BAPP sign up bonuses. Why would you take Gold and stop your chance of Platinum one for 2 years or not just take up the 60k BAPP one that’s been run a couple times.

The upgrade bonus, gold to platinum is up to 80k points now with a £10k spend in first 6 months
Just offered 12k points for £1k spend (~6 weeks from renewal). My last retention bonus was late Dec’24 so didnt need to wait the full 12 months. Yet to be seen whether it posts straight away or the spend is actually needed.
First retention offer after 1yr free. Offered 12k points for £1k spend in 3 months. Pushed for more (‘a friend received 25,000 points offer’) but no dice. Total spend on card ~20k in first year.
Regarding pro rata refund on card fee – is it best to keep a balance on the card when you cancel? Can you still make a payment for any outstanding balance, even though the account is closed? Thanks very much in advance.

Don’t think Amex would allow you to cancel with a balance unless the refund can cover it.
It’s very easy to get the refund back by cheque or bank transfer.Regarding pro rata refund on card fee – is it best to keep a balance on the card when you cancel? Can you still make a payment for any outstanding balance, even though the account is closed? Thanks very much in advance.

Complained about the 20% rise in the membership fee and was offered 5,000 points for £1k spend in 3 months.. considering this is my third year this seems pretty measly and I guess is due to a relatively low spend. To be honest I only use it for cash-back offers and double points with BA.. Chase debit is better for cash-back and for big things stoozing on a 0% card is better value for money.
Will probably use the lounge passes over the summer and then cancel for pro-rata refund.

No, that’s wrong, they do allow you to cancel with a balance owed. Might only apply to those with a direct debit set up though.
Partner offered 12,000 for £1k spend within 3 months. Renewal happened 2 or 3 weeks ago.
How long before renewal is best time. My anniversary is end of may

Just got offered 12K points for 1k spend in 3 months. Thought it was poor, probably spent a minimum of 25k a year the last couple of years. Had it for almost six years and “only” had one retention offer before.
