It’s not that far fetched guys. Your best placed to send someone £270 as a “hold”. They send the points to you and then when your 27k arrive the other person hands back £270.
I would be open to something like this
Thanks for the contribution zapato!
I can lend you the 27k you need through this type of arrangement and I’m a Gold member.
Thanks Angela! Are you on Flyertalk? Can direct-message me there, my alias on FT is Fuggi (as there’s no direct messaging on HfP forums)
Yes I’m on there too. I’ll send you a message.
Because that would put too much leverage in the hands of the lender – who could just not return the cash as well (you run this risk anyway with the £270, but at least it’s for less and the OP [i.e. me] would not be out of pocket vis a vis outright purchasing the Avios…)
Ah, not sure what happened to my reply. Here’s a short summary:
With a bridging loan in the form of a swap, the risk is all on the lender at £270 as they would expect to get the Avios back from BA, if for whatever reason you didn’t pay back the 27k Avios. You would be sitting happy because you got the Avios at a discount, while the lender has to pay £225 from their own pocket (plus your £270) to get those Avios back.
If you just want to buy/sell Avios at a discount via non-official channels, that’s a different type of deal and in terms of value, probably quite good value for both parties.
But I noticed one potential flaw in your original plan. You said you shared 20k Avios from your wife’s account to yours? But this page says recipients can only receive a maximum 27k shared Avios in one year, so a fellow HfP reader would only be able to lend you 7k at best:
https://pgt.shopping.ba.com/resources/terms
7. A Recipient of shared Avios can only receive a maximum of 27,000 Avios in any one calendar year in aggregate, irrespective of the number of Senders. We reserve the right to amend the maximum annual amount that can be received at any time.Because that would put too much leverage in the hands of the lender – who could just not return the cash as well (you run this risk anyway with the £270, but at least it’s for less and the OP [i.e. me] would not be out of pocket vis a vis outright purchasing the Avios…)

So effectively I wouldn’t have been able to anyway – unless an alternative transfer route is found (e.g. through Qatar which again I have yet to go and test…)

Still worth looking into the Qatar transfer details – the frontpages say you can transfer up to 250k points per year, but I haven’t tried it yet
Fuggi, I just saw the “Free share” conditions. You might still be able to make it work with a Gold member using a free share (27k) + paid share (5k), to get your 32k Avios:
————————–
3. The Sender can only share a maximum of 27,000 Avios on a free basis per recipient per calendar year. Recipients can receive a maximum of 54,000 Avios each calendar year, however, the maximum number of Avios a recipient can receive on a free basis is 27,000 and the maximum a recipient can receive on a paid basis is 27,000.
————————–Is it actually against T&C’s to gift Avíos to anyone without monetary exchange? Reminding me of that woman who was being paid by tenants with Avíos. What ever happened wit that case?

It’s coming to court the same week as Curve’s case against Amex.
It’s too many mouse clicks involved here for something so simple. Just buy some Avios… yes you’ll pay over the odds, but for such a small number of Avios, does it really matter?!
Or can u sign up for the amex gold card and get the SUB?

Are you sure you meant to put your email address in as your username?

No, but the option to change is greyed out in my settings! Any tips on how I change this when the option is gretlyed out would be appreciated
send an email to the ‘hello’ email address at the bottom of the page and Rob / Rhys may be able to change it for you.

32k Avios costs north of £600
It’s quite a chunky amount – if I was in the business of throwing money at the problem I probably wouldn’t be trying to use air miles in the first place 😉Have the Bonvoy points landed yet?
Not yet 🙁
I’ve called BAEC and Marriott Bonvoy and raised cases with both
I fear my middle name (which is on Marriott Bonvoy but not on BAEC) may be jamming the transfer processUpdate:
1) Marriott:Avios transfer finally completed after several calls chasing it, took 18 days in the end
2) My booking: I got the booking, but in the end I had to use a trick, knowing that it might fail.
I decided to try this:
– Background: I was missing 45k Avios in total for the booking, I would receive 32k from Marriott and knew I would have to buy at least 13k
– I didnt want to lose the seat availability so I did a “Buy Avios” (directly) in two separate lots: 15k and 30k (the total cost was €865 instead of €845 for buying 45k directly, a €20 diff), then booked my flights
– Once the Marriott transfer of 32k Avios came in, I requested a refund of the “Buy Avios” 30k
– To my surprise – the refund was processed almost immediately – the 30k avios were debited (from those I received through Marriott) and I have the cash refunded to my credit cardMoral of the story – if you need to book an award seat asap and the avios are incoming but haven’t arrived in your account, it is possible to ‘borrow’ Avios combining the ‘Buy Avios’ scheme and the 14day refund available, however you need to make sure that the Avios arrive before your 14 days are up as after that you’re stuck with the Avios you bought.
Thanks for feeding back fuggi. I realise some mocked you for having the audacity to ask to borrow, but it sounds like it was ok in the end and you’ve uncovered a little known “hack”
