What is the best route for avios please? Partner does not own an amex. I spend just over £1000 a month on my Amex.
Is it “American Express Preferred Rewards Gold” for one year. Followed by, “British Airways American Express Premium Plus”?
What about adding partner as well?
Thank you very much
The Gold card has the same earning rate as the BAPP up to £25000 and is free for the first year. On the other hand you won’t qualify for a sign up bonus and you can’t generate a 2 4 1 voucher. So you will have to assess whether you will be able to make use of a voucher generated in the first year. After the first year the price of the Gold card will jump to £195, so unless you make use of all the benefits, it’s going to be hard to justify keeping it. You will still qualify for the bonus on the BAPP, so you can switch to that.
Your partner should qualify for a bonus on both the Gold and the BAPP, so there the Gold > BAPP route is more valuable. You can refer them for 9000 MR points/Avios, and they can refer you for the BAPP if you started with the Gold first.
You will also qualify for the 75,000 1st year bonus on the Platinum card (I believe 80,000 with a referral), so this is another option instead of the Gold. (The Gold disqualifies for the Platinum Bonus)
However that requires 10k spend in 6 months and you will have to pay the full £650 card fee unless you cancel before February 29th when pro-rata refunds end.
