Hi All! My wife and I are planning to visit Bali for ~7 days in December (17-24 Dec) for our anniversary. But we are slightly on the edge because of the weather. Could someone who has been there in December share how it is?
We don’t have kids and are looking for a relaxing vacation in a nice resort without too much travelling around. Will weather be a challenge? Which islands do you recommend?
Thanks!
@as02 – it will be very humid indeed, so it’s a matter of how you tolerate that. We have been in mid-November and at Christmas. While it’s better in Ubud than by the coast, we found it quite oppressive that and makes doing even minor activity like early morning walks not much fun. We gave up trying to play tennis.
There are quite a few posters here who live or have lived in SEAsia and offer great advice about the region, but have perhaps got more used to the humidity. I think also that as one gets older, one’s body sometimes tolerates heat/humidity less well. It’s a very personal thing; you will probably get as many answers either way.
In the positive side, Bali is stunningly beautiful (although rather busy nowadays) but your posts suggests you may not want to travel around which might add to the considerations about the decision.
It’ll be humid and wet at times of the day but survivable if you take things easy! Note that it’ll be very busy with Aussies then.
Sanur has some nice resort properties whilst being quite central to do some trips out (which one must do in Bali it’s dirt cheap to hire a driver and a guide for a day or two). Otherwise Seminyak is good with lots of great food options. Avoid Nusa Dua as it’s far to get anywhere else and you could really be anywhere. Kuta is where the Aussies go to party so also to be avoided.
You could consider either the Gilis, Lombok or somewhere like Nusa Lembongan but need to consider the travel time if you’ve got a week + the sea conditions may not be ideal (you can fly to Lombok though)
If you haven’t booked yet personally I’d consider going to Phuket instead, perfect weather then and although busy that time of year it’s manageable.
I’ve stayed in Bali, Sanur, Ubud and Lombok/Gilis and by far my favourite (and the only place that we’ve returned to) was Gili Air. Amazing snorkelling and fairly calm sea, opportunities to do day trip on a boat or to Lombok, excellent restaurant options. Yes, it is harder to get to – taking a boat from Bali or flying into Lombok – but we found that well worth the hassle.
Additional context: we are a family of 4, first visit (Dec 2019) our kids were 2.5 and 4 months and second time (Aug 2023) they were 6 and 4.
Thanks all! This was all super helpful. Upon more research, we are now inclined to look for another location. We were ideally looking for some sun, but don’t want to sign up for this level of humidity along with it. 🙂
Best time to visit Bali is July and August.
For December, Thailand west coast or south Vietnam are better options.
