The hotel du vin or malmaison are both central and nice. Also the recently reopened grand hotel.

There’s the Voco St John’s in Solihull, which is five minutes walk from the station and just a brick throw away from JDBs Creation offices.
It’s often available for as little as 12k points.

I feel relatively qualified to comment as I spent 35 nights over the last three months in Birmingham. I wanted to stay in a chain hotel both for consistency of product and to achieve status. I looked at all the Hilton hotels and wasn’t impressed by their offering (Courtyards and Hamptons etc.). But Marriott seemed to have a better proposition. I’ve stayed at the Aloft. It’s in the university quarter Eastside. There really isn’t much around there and if you want bars, restaurants then you’re out of luck. It’s about a 20 minute walk into town. On the plus side, prices are consistently affordable and as a new hotel (8 months +/-) the rooms have a good spec and the hotel hasn’t seen any wear and tear. If like me you come in late and leave early the roadside parking outside is free from 18.30 until 08.00. There aren’t many places but I’ve always managed to bag the last one. Breakfast is less than special and I almost always give it a miss. The gym is small but has just about enough to get by and is never busy. The other place I like is AC. Super friendly staff and you’re in a new development full of restaurants. China town is less than 10 minutes stroll and great for food. Again a quiet gym. The only downside is parking which is expensive at £17.20 per overnight visit. The rooms are clean and the executive ones a little too large. I personally prefer the toned down ‘funky’ of aloft to the minimalism of AC. But as I say I stay at both.

V useful thread because I am looking for somewhere in Brum for a family weekend! AC sounds good. Any views on the Clayton?

Clayton is not bad. Not great for parking. Sometimes good offers on grupon.

We have stayed at both the HbH on Broad Street and the HGI on Brindley Place in the past two weeks (chasing Diamond).

The HbH offers great value for money (we paid £57 per night for a room with a sofa bed last week), especially given that it is not far to walk anywhere and includes the decent (but nothing special) breakfast. It is not the best hotel you will ever stay at, but as a base for Birmingham it is fine. Parking available on site for £12 a day, which is good given the location. The gym isn’t huge, but okay for a simple workout.

The HGI is only a two-minute walk away from The HbH (perfect if you don’t mind packing up between nights so you complete more Hilton stays) and as it is on Brindley Place has an air of being much more upmarket. The rooms are not very big and I am not a fan of their small bathrooms, but the beds are huge and comfortable, plus you have an ironing board and fridge in the room as well. The breakfast spread is fine (more variety than HbH) and you are only a few minutes walk from several good restaurants and bars. It is also the closest hotel to the Arena (what I still call the NIA), should that matter. I didn’t use the gym, but they do have one and recently rooms have been going for a good price – again in the region of £60, which is low (I wouldn’t expect that to continue in 2022). This is MrsHBO’s go to location – she’s stayed there three times in the past six months (and that’s high praise indeed).

The issue with the AC is the noise if it wasn’t people outside it was the noise of chairs / tables moving across the floor from the bar/restaurant downstairs / outside.

Indigo is nice and also near the mailbox but I hear the AC struggles vs the heat in summer if you like it cool.

    Park Regis another option?
