Hi, i have the 2-4-1 voucher via BAPP. I have another player and don’t intend to use my 2-4-1 for the next 18 months. Is there any risk in me cancelling my BAPP instead of downgrading and re-applying for a card later so i can book my 2-4-1 tickets?
My plan was to get my partner to apply for an AMEX Card closer to the time when we are ready to use our 2-4-1 and get her to book the tickets on her card. This will allow me to reset my 24 month period sooner so i can take up offers in 2 years time. In the mean time i’d probably got for the barclaycard avios mastercard offer.
The risk is that she doesn’t get accepted for any amex card and then i’d obviously have to re-apply for an amex of some sort to be able to use the 2-4-1. Am i taking a risk here by not holding any amex and re-applying if she can’t get a card? (could i also get refused if i re-apply?)
Or should i just downgrade the card now, hold an amex, to ensure i can book the 2-4-1, but obviously this wouldn’t reset my 24 month period and stop me taking offers for a long time
Thanks
There’s always a risk you won’t get accepted again, or not within the timeframe you need to use your 241. And of course there’s always the risk that BA will sort out the IT so you have to use the card which earned the voucher! I’d hedge my bets and make sure we had at least one Amex in the household so the chances will be that you can use the 241. There are a couple which don’t affect your eligibility for a BAPP sign up after 24 months.

Thanks, if BA sort out the IT won’t that effect most people on here though? Unless people are keeping the same BAPP card for 2 years and paying £500 in membership fee’s.
I may just downgrade the card to be on the safe side, but wanted to know if anyone had any experience of cancelling and then re-applying and not getting accepted. I feel like if i’ve been accepted by Amex once, and i have a great credit rating (never taken a loan or been in debit in my life), there should be no issues with me being accepted again (for one of the many cards amex offer) but like you said there’s always a risk i suppose.
Being accepted once does not determine you will be accepted again. Even if your personal circumstances e.g income is not changing. High inflation will erode your monthly surplus which creditors are thinking about. Also they are always thinking about their cut off range, so if you make it in once but they change their cut offs and you fall outside it then you won’t be approved again. And that’s only coming from the credit risk view.
Have you considered opening and keeping the nectar card for the long term whilst SUB reset? Then you will always have an amex open, the annual cost is low after the first year. Usually one good amex offer will make it break even.
Yes – I was declined for a new BAPP last year but accepted 3 months later even though my circumstances hadn’t changed. The only difference was that I put what is actually my secondary income (from tutoring) as my main occupation, and included my pension (which is actually my main income) with “other household income”, so who knows how Amex scores these things?! Several other people have posted similar experiences if you look on other Amex threads.
Of course an IT change would affect a lot of people here but BA isn’t exactly going to base any decision on that! Hence my decision to keep at least one Amex open as its always a possibility – though IT is so low down on BA’s priority list that it’s not causing me to lose any sleep.
*Just remembered I also reduced the credit limit on my gold card substantially as well – from £11k to £5k which might have had an impact? I was hardly using it but I suppose Amex might have been worried that I might suddenly and uncharacteristically go on a mad spending spree and decide not to pay the bill 🤷♀️

I suspect somehow Amex is able to check if the income declared is reasonably correct. Would explain many self employed running into trouble. They probably declare a higher income which doesn’t match the minimum wage they usually take out of their company.

What matters is the total credit limit with them and the credit limit with other banks. Last year many would’ve easily racked up credit limits with all the bonuses on Avios Barclaycard etc. Amex also is guilty of stealthily increasing credit limits to abnormal levels.

Thanks everyone
Just to clear something up, are you all talking about me re-applying for another BAPP card? Because it’s my understanding that i just need to hold any amex and thats enough to book the 2-4-1 tickets. Do you think i still might be declined/rejected from any/every amex card if i need to re-apply in the future and is it still a risk that can happen?
@jezza76 – yes, there is a risk you might be declined/rejected for any card as Amex is being more picky about who it wants as customers in a tightening credit environment and tightening up on people playing around with their cards, so you won’t necessarily be at the top of their cake list.
@jezza76 is there any reason why your partner can’t apply for an Amex while you still hold your BAPP?
That way if she gets a rejection you still have the Amex.
And if you refer her at least you also get the referral points and she would be entitled to the SUB
Keep in mind you can use your friends or families AMEX card for the 241. Paying £500 is not a pittance for the 2x BAPPs, just for 1.5 and also stopping you from earning further SUBS in 24months. I plan to get the 2x 241s, cancel and restart the clock.
if you need your 1point per p. Then get free Barclays.
Call me old fashioned but why not stick with the original cards rather than play the system and risk losing all. Happy with my original Platinum, BAPP and company cards and annual spend (esp BAPP 1.5 value per £) generates more than enough points and benefits with no anxiety and hassle.

For me, I don’t have high enough income, or spending. No business spending either to generate enough points to get very far given constant devaluation. SUB are therefore an extremely important part of my strategy.
Anxiety and hassle is therefore what I have to trade with for more avios.

Thanks for clearing that up mate

Yes, my partner is about to apply for a mortgage or possibly move home so she can’t apply for any cards as it might effect her credit rating

It’s my understanding that one of the two people travelling on the 2-4-1 voucher has to book the seats using their amex?
Thats how i read it in the above article…
Have i got that wrong?
