Hello all, new to the site and have a question – apologies if it is an obvious answer or posted elsewhere, but I have looked.
A year an ago my wife signed up for a Barclaycard Avios Plus card as we wanted to try and earn some points on day to day spending. It’s been a year and we’ve accrued 90K points and the upgrade voucher.
We hope to use the points and voucher in 2026 (no clue where yet) and continue saving Avois in the meantime. I am considering cancelling the wife’s card, and starting my own to attract the addition 25K bonus points and voucher but having read some articles it seems that this may cause issues insomuch I will have vouchers in different names, my wife’s voucher will not be ‘cashed in’ having cancelled the card etc. We have an ‘household account’ where I can see the points, but her voucher is only visible on her own BA account.
Am I better off just keeping the card, getting another voucher and forgoing the addition 25K bonus I would occur if I got a card out in my own name ? Thanks Matt
Firstly there may be no need to cancel your wife’s card, although it doesn’t affect the rest of the answers. Check if she’s got the option in the app to switch to the free version: costs nothing, and leaves the option open to upgrade back again later if desired (and subsequently offered).
No problem whatsoever using a voucher if you do cancel, as once it’s in the BA account it’s yours to keep.
The only complication with having two vouchers in different accounts is that you would have to make two separate bookings, one for each of you. While you can use a Barclays voucher for someone else, you can’t make one booking using two vouchers from different places.
Up to you whether the extra 25K makes it worthwhile.
Great, there appears to be an option on her app to change to a choice of several cards including the basic (fee-less) Barclaycard Avios, so I think we will do that than I can take out the plus card and grab the points – thank you.
When the time comes I guess we could book two outgoings on the one account and use a voucher ‘one way’ for both of us, and the other (my) account on the return and use the voucher in the same way?
Thanks Matt
I don’t think this is possible because you can’t use the voucher starting outside the U.K. and you couldn’t have the trip on one booking due to using vouchers from 2 accounts. There are lots of articles and threads on here to help you maximise its use.
Not wishing to complicate things, but have you considered a BAPP alongside a Barclaycard instead?
We downgraded one of our premium Avios Barclaycards to the free version.
I feel this is the best free card out there due to universal acceptance, 1 avios per pound spent and in the unlikely event we rack up £20k spend we can get 7k avios (if disinclined to accept the voucher). It is our backup card where our Amex BAPP are not accepted.
We hope to use the points and voucher in 2026 (no clue where yet) and continue saving Avois in the meantime.
Personally, I’d be careful of paying for premium credit cards and collecting all of these vouchers if you don’t yet know what you want to do. The Barclaycard voucher can save you some money, but it is quirky and requires work/planning/flexibility to extract that value.
Others might have a different view, but I’d recommend thinking about what you want to do and then working back from there to inform and maximise your strategies for credit cards, voucher earning, and Avios collecting.
The OP earned the voucher in 2024 and planned to use it in 2026? Just remember it has 2 year expiry!
If your partner is likely to qualify for the card again in the future, I would be slightly tempted to cancel so you can do the bonus again in 2 years time. But lots of feedback of difficult to qualify for the card so maybe not.
