I am a long-time holder of personal Amex Plat. It used to be my main spending card, now it’s more sporadic.
Have recently started a business while remaining in full-time employment. The business will need to incur expenditure for its operating costs which can be paid using a credit card. At the moment the business is very much a startup – there are no accounts etc.
I value the Platinum card for the hotel benefits and earning MR – I don’t want to lose the benefits.
I am attracted to the idea of cancelling my personal Plat and opening a business Plat, primarily for tax and ease of expensing.
This prompts two questions for me:
1. What checks/documentation is required to open a business card with Amex? Will I be approved on the basis of personal credit and being a longstanding customer, or does this require some sort of business credit score and history?
2. How will the shifting of the associated hotel benefits etc. to the new card be handled? I assume I have, for example, Hilton Gold by virtue of some API call. I don’t want to have to sign up to all the schemes again, or lose status everywhere and have to argue to get it back.
With regard to 2, you will have to relink your existing hotel loyalty schemes, but you won’t lose anything as a result.
Make sure you do it as soon as you can, though, if you plan on shifting MR points to any of the schemes – and get the Business card associated with your existing personal account before cancelling that, else you could lose your MR points balance
I don’t see why you shouldn’t keep your personal card for your purely personal expenses.
Amex really don’t like business cards being used for personal expenses (and vice versa)

Thanks, I will switch to another card for personal expenses, so this shouldn’t be an issue.
Amex very much lets you self certify that you have a business so no real issues there. Absolutely no requirement for accounts, VAT etc.
Wouldn’t bother opening one this month though, you’re probably too busy holidaying.

Seems like a decent bonus offer is coming….
I dont think you get the same benefits on business platinum that you get on personal.. no hotel status, no dining etc. Only good use is x2 points on £10K spend every month.

You do get hotel status. No dinig credit. Slightly better insurance and double points at £10000 are great too
