This is today’s chat thread.
If you have specific questions about Avios, hotels or credit cards, please ask them in the appropriate forum and not here. This thread is a good place to post interesting deals you have spotted or your general thoughts on travel and all things miles and points. Thank you for contributing.
Wakey wakey HfP hive. Last day for half-price Loganair Avios bookings. Anyone planning a trip to Barra?
Another sign of rapidly approaching old age. My travel insurance with multi trip .com is increasing from £ 78.92 to £ 127.01 – a 60% increase.
They have cited
“Prices quoted include annualised mid-term adjustments or notified changes in circumstances which incurred an additional premium where applicable.”
The only ‘mid-term adjustment’ I can think of would be my turning 60 at the end of August.
Since I won’t be doing any or many long hauls now I need to reassess my travel insurance needs anyway.
Still I have free prescriptions and my ‘senior” rail card and National Express coach cards to come!

Indeed! I’m dreading my trip insurance cost for my 4 month tour, when I start to look into it, most people at 60 are mortgage free, and have a healthy bank balance, but senior years can be a disadvantage in other financial ways.
Not quite such a slam dunk since the fee increase & switch to Aviva but it’s worth having a look at the Nationwide account if you can benefit from some of the other add ons. Lloyds and Virgin also have good options here. @gordon when I was away for an extended period Nationwide with a trip extension worked out very cost effective, not sure how that works with Aviva now

Nationwide trip extension now is a rip off. Unlike previously when you paid for the extension it lasted the whole year, now they basically quote you for that ONE trip (very expensive!) and the cover then reverts back to the maximum. (30 days?)
Have a look at Co_Op if you never go above 45 days away, as there is no extension BUT there is no excess to be paid on any claim and it covers up to ages 75
@SamG @Blindman67 – Thanks for the tips, I’ve had a few recommendations from @Davefl a while back, so I’ll look into them.
Is there an instant route for membership rewards to Loganair avios? Thanks
Edit- looks like via BA. Will try it.
@Gordon – OH has NatWest black account which comes with travel insurance and covers me and the children when they were younger. We don’t pay age premium, but it might start at 70. Maximum number of days per trip is 90. Also get a month’s cover for winter sports. On our travels we ensure we are well within the 90 days, just in case of travel disruption. They have been very helpful in the past when we’ve made a claim. Not sure now as they changed insurers last year. Worth looking around. It might be worth cutting your trip length and then returning – two long holidays instead of one!
BA bonus (tier) points offers now extended to December 2026, in what is a badly-worded extension. Travel needs to be booked by December this year.

@LD27 – Thank you for the tips, I was going to go for even longer, about a year of so, but that would have been a bit excessive at my age, so I’m visiting Thailand,Cambodia,Vietnam & Laos on this trip (Nov-Mar) and returning to rest of a few months.
Then back off again to visit Indonesia, Malaysia, Jakarta and most of the Philippines, so I guess I’m going to have to suck up the insurance costs, as I don’t want to reduce the trip time.

Having read your post, I’ve just been onto the BA website and there’s another sale! US and Europe CE included. Haven’t looked at anything else.

That isn’t new. The extension for bookings up to 31/12/24 and travel up to 21/12/26 – which is what I’m seeing on that webpage – was announced some time ago.

Wow. Sounds amazing. Sounds like you’re making the most of travelling whilst fit and healthy, which is what we’re doing.

You’re right – this came through in February as it turns out. I got a new message on BA.com and completely forgot all about it. My apologies!
BA is down. On the chat with a very nice lady that is telling me phone lines are down, they cannot see booking, make changes or anything.
Website bugging too and works from time to time if you keep refreshing.
Just got an email about their summer sale … they sent it just in time!

I hope it is ‘comprehensive’ – the Hilton has been in terrible shape for several years. I moved to the Kimpton Clocktower after COVID, although it’s also going downhill.
