Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Companion Voucher booking using household Avios

  • 13 posts

My elderly father is no longer fit to travel but has a personal Avios balance of 297,505. He shares a household account with my mother who has a personal balance of 14,877. My mother is about to earn a companion voucher on her standard BA Amex card (this is her own Amex and in no way linked to my father). Both my parents want to use the household Avios and companion voucher so that my mother & sister can go to New York together in Club Suite. They’ve asked me to sort it all out for them so I immediately thought of posting in the HfP forum. Sorry if this has been answered before but will they be able to use my father’s Avios combined with my mother’s companion voucher even though my father wont be travelling on the booking? Thank you.

No problem with using the avios from the household account without your Dad travelling, but amex vouchers from the standard BA card can only be used for redemptions in economy – so no club suite from that.

It is worth considering getting your mum to upgrade her card to premium for triggering the voucher.

The sister will need to be added to the “friends and family” list for the redemption, though that is easy online.

Yes any companion voucher generated from the Blue card is limited to Economy only, theyd need to upgrade to BAPP to open up availability on the voucher in J.

If your mother has already spent over £10k and is accepted for the upgrade to BAPP (not guaranteed any more), she would trigger the voucher immediately. There is some sort of glitch which sometimes results in the voucher still showing as per the blue Amex but apparently Amex can amend this.

Also be aware that there’s no 100% guarantee of getting Club Suite so it’s best not to set one’s heart on it. Your father’s avios would easily get them to NYC in F though, which tends to have decent availability, if they don’t mind stumping up extra cash for the surcharges. It would be a lovely trip for them if they did that.

Thank you so much. She’s already spent £9600 so will attempt to upgrade the card and see what Amex say!
