Changed to a Barclays Premier account a couple years back when I opened an Avios Barclaycard but I never received the black Premier debit card you’re supposed to get which has higher withdrawal limits.
Phoned up today and have been told that switching to the black debit card involves a hard credit search just to switch to a different debit card? Was quite surprised when this was mentioned and said it’s policy and they had no way around it.
Went ahead with it and I’ve been declined but advisor I spoke to has appealed it. Seems such a ridiculous thing for simply having a change in the colour of a debit card and a higher withdrawal limit of my own cash.
That does seem crazy nuts but Barclays do seem to struggle with the most simple of things. I guess it’s the issue with a legacy bank and legacy systems.
Given that it’s Barclays and it seems only their complaints department has the ability to achieve anything I wouldn’t waste your time and I’d get stuck in with a complaint.
As per their lead in on:

With a Premier Current Account, you can enjoy a range of benefits just for you. You’ll receive an exclusive black debit card that lets you withdraw up to £1,000 daily from cash machines(1)
(1) Subject to status and available funds. Individual cash machine limits may apply
I’d also be asking what is up with your “status” as far as Barclays is concerned given that they have approved you for a premier account. The caveat is ambiguous anyway. Is getting the card subject to status or being able to get £1,000 out with it.
They are jokers!
Battling with their complaints department at the moment for another issue so this’ll be fun. Got told to wait 48 hours for the appeal to be processed so I’ll see what happens before I complain again.
Woman on the phone didn’t seem to be able to justify it, just kept saying that it was because it’s “the premier card” as if there’s anything actually special about it.
For anyone interested, I stuck a complaint in on Wednesday through Resolver and had contact the following Wednesday.
Had a ridiculous response from someone who wasn’t even a complaint handler, but someone (Customer Care Leader?) who appeared to be from the branch the account was set up in 14 years ago.
“ I have looked into this and the reason it was declined is at this time you do not qualify for the premier card. To qualify for the premier account and its benefits you need to have a gross annual income of £75000 paid into your current account with us or £100000 in a savings account held with us.”
1. I do qualify and already hold the account
2. The account had had £60k+ net through it in the past 12 months
3. If I didn’t qualify, I wouldn’t currently hold a Premier account
4. When I had to “apply” for the premier debit card I told them what my income was
Reiterated these facts and they’ve got back to me again with
“Your application to our application team (???) and they would like to see three years’ worth of address history. We can update this for your behalf and re process the application.”
They already have all this info but I provided it again, but then I was amused to see Barclays have decided to run ANOTHER hard credit check on me without even making me aware. So now 2 checks within a month for a simple debit card.
Getting pretty fed up with them at this point for all that’s essentially a bit of bloody plastic. Incompetence seems to be their only strong point.
