Just a reminder maybe, for those going to the US.
My card was rejected at the Avis rental desk last night, as it was flagged up as a Debit card.
At the end of the rental, they will be happy to accept payment with any Debit/Credit card.Best to avoid using curve for deposit type payments anyway at hotels etc, acts weird or occasionally has gone wrong (in the early days, might be better now)
As you say you can often make a payment at the end that is a “proper” payment, not a hold. At a hotel this is best done the evening before
