Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Flight includes BA (1st flight) + Qatar (2nd) Metal, BA Baggage rules applies?

    Hi guys,

Booked economy on the BA website for LGW-DOH-JED where its BA operating LGW-DOH and then Qatar on DOH-JED. Whilst booking, as shown on the BA website, BA have stated the weight of the first part of the leg is 2 X 32KG and the second part of the leg is 2 pieces. Correct me, if I am not mistaken, in that the first operating carrier baggage policy is applied to the whole ticket/journey. Therefore I would be getting an allowance of 64KG from Gatters to Jeddah in economy.

Its booked as one itinerary on the BA website, but i did wonder if i have to collect and re-check bags at Doha or whether staff at Gatters would kick up a fuss in that I am overweight in baggage in the case that 2 pieces means 46KG and now 64KG as what i saw when I was booking my ticket on the BA website. My ticket, generated from the Qatar Airways website also shows 2 pieces along with MMB on BA showing 2 pieces, the websites of Qatar and BA does not tell the weight in KG.

I think I am over complicating this more than it is, but some reassurance would be grateful.

Baggage allowance on code-share and interline journeys
Does your journey include travel on an airline other than Qatar Airways (including Qatar Airways code-share flights such as those of Cathay Pacific)? If so, that airline may offer you a lower baggage allowance. Baggage allowances on code-share routes are determined by IATA’s Most Significant Marketing Carrier (MSC) rule.

Where a code-share or interline flight is part of an itinerary that begins or ends in the USA. or Canada, baggage allowances and charges applicable at the itinerary’s origin will apply throughout.

If you are booking a journey that includes a code-share flight with another carrier, please contact us to confirm your baggage allowance.

I wonder what that means when it says most significant marketing carrier, since i booked on BA would it be that BA luggage policy applies.

If you have 2x32kg it means you have silver or are flying business.

In that case, I would just check the business rules for both carriers. Usually the short haul routes have more restrictive rules but in this case that is BA.

I suppose the first place you use will let you know go the rules. They will then tag the luggage and send it to is final destination without further checks.

Maybe issue is return in this case 🤷

Most significant means the airline operating the longest flight between continents/regions. In this case, BA.

If you have 2x 32kg, rather than BA/ BAH standard of 2x 23kg then you’re either BA Silver or Gold. In which case your FF perks, for all intents and purposes, override any, alliance, carriers standard luggage rules and especially when it was booked directly through BA.

I’ve flown CX, AY, AA & QR and it’s never been an issue at either end with AA/ US carriers being the most on-top/ strict as a general rule in my experience. The most I’ve had to do is mention my BA FF status granting additional allowances and that’s only been a handful of times. I don’t ever recall having to even show them the webpage stating so but you might like to have it saved as an image or two/ available offline ( though at DOH I’d hope WiFi wasn’t ever an issue for you).

If it makes you feel more at ease. The route is well established along with BA covering the London leg and Qatar the onward to many a destination. They are VERY used to BA FFs and the rules/ perks in place across alliance partners at every level. If you were unlikely enough to get a new check-in agent who was unsure then chances are that a colleague would clarify and help resolve the issue immediately.

On a codeshare/ interline itinerary then the “originating carrier” ( whose policies take precedence) apply throughout the booking. BA would retain that position on your return legs as it’s based on the 1st carrier of the entire itinerary not who provides the 1st flight in each direction. You don’t have two itinerary’s. It’s counted as one in its whole.

I booked an economy ticket to JED and I don’t have status with BA either, and my return from JED is on a Qatar airways aircraft then from Doha to London Gatters its BA. So i know that on the return from JED i would probably have 2x23KG and not the 2X32KG.

Its the outbound, which is stated on the BA website whilst booking, that I get 2x32KG in economy. Will have to try the airport and see where this goes.

Thanks a lot, this must mean that I get 2x32KG for both the outbound and return as im flying to and from Doha with BA which is the longest route. I appreciate the clarification here.

Sincerely thankful for your in depth clarification, this does put me at ease here, however there is one thing to mention, I do not have any status with BA and I am flying economy. So i guess i will rock up to the airport with 2X32KG and take it from there.
