Hertz in NZ – too good to be true?

I currently have a 1 way booking for 17 days from Wellington, NZ in Dec 25 to Auckland in Jan 26 with Avis costing £1111.
I been checking comparisons and other countries, and I have found that Hertz (direct) are offering a similar car for £290.
Is this too good to be true or is it a one way return offer and not a glitch?
Other car prices with Hertz for the same period were similar to Avis, but for 2 car types they had these ultra low prices.
I have not used Hertz in many years – has anyone any experience with hertz NZ?
This could be because Hertz needs particular car types to be relocated from Wellington to Auckland.
However it seems a bit early for them to know what types of cars they require to be moved in December.
In NZ I would always go with a local car hire company rather than an international chain, however £290 seems like an ok price so you could just book it and keep checking prices as your trip approaches.
It is sometimes possible to get relocation hires for free, just like in the UK where you can get £1 rentals from Scotland to London. Sometimes NZ car hire companies even include one free tank of fuel and a free inter-island vehicle ferry ticket, but obviously 17 days is too long for it to be free when the drive can be done in one day.
Had a similar experience with Hertz on a one way in Aus, very cheap and no hassle but the car was not the best, nothing wrong with it, just a little older. To be expected really.
Thanks for the heads up! I’ll be doing a similar trip at the same time, and am seeing similar rates for an Intermediate AWD. Hertz is fine in NZ, but often outpriced by local companies – clearly not in this case.
Might see you at the counter!
Don’t know about NZ, but I’ve hired Polestars from Hertz in the UK for £17 per day on more than one occasion.
If car hire is meant to be pricier in the UK, then I guess the £290 price in NZ is not a mistake.
Sounds a good deal compared with £1111!
As a frequent visitor to NZ, we usually use local car hire companies to get the best deal. Most travellers drive North to South so you can often get good deals for car relocations going North. These often don’t happen until much nearer the time. Sometimes we have taken the car on the Interislander ferry sometimes not – depends what the deals are. Picton and Wellington are small so not a major issue to go as foot passengers. In good weather, it’s a lovely trip, but it can get very rough. Last time the four of us were the only travellers left in the main lounge, happily eating. Everyone else had disappeared.
Thanks for all the feedback. It has reassured me that it should be OK. I have used Apex in Queenstown and they were fine, but for most other rentals I have used Avis recently, due to having status with them, which has given very good value for upgrades.
I have applied for a Hertz status match to my Avis account.
For Hertz, I put in my Finnair account number – I presume it will earn Avios, but I don’t know how much. I saw Qatar listed too – does it make any difference which I put in?
Oh – that was quick…about 2mins!
“This is confirmation that your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards account has been upgraded to the Hertz President’s Circle tier. Within 24 to 48 hours, you should be able to observe the status change. However, to ensure that it appears, please remember to periodically refresh your account.
Your business as a Hertz President’s Circle member is appreciated.”
I’m stuck as a Five Star.
What email address did you use for the status match?
I just used the webpage below. (Found on Google)

Thank you.
Got a reply after an hour or two confirming my upgrade to President’s Circle.
I’m both pleased and angry.
I’ve done nearly 20 rentals in the last 12 months (all 1 week or more), and could have benefitted from the additional points as PC status.
Glad to hear you are now feeling Presidential! Sorry you missed out on the 20 rental rewards.
Where you refused a status match over email previously?
@Whisper2 – Good tip regarding the status match…confirmed within the hour.
I re-checked my upcoming one way booking in NZ SI but still find Europcar – of all companies – by far the cheapest option for me. Likewise in Australia, I have a booking in Perth where Sixt are almost half price compared to the other big companies on a like for like basis. Your thread was a timely prompt though.

Where you refused a status match over email previously?
No, I never tried.
Didn’t know it was possible to get status matched from Avis PC to Hertz PC.
But on another note, I checked the qualification criteria again and it definitely states 15 rentals for Hertz PC status.
I’ve exceeded that and not only did I not get upgraded, I actually lost my Five Star status the other week for reasons unknown and had to get it re-instated through email to customer services.
