-
My wife applied for the Amex Platinum card last October when the bonus was 30,000 points however two days later the bonus was increased to either 75,000 or 100,000 ( I don’t have a record of the level it went up to)
I asked Amex if she cancelled within the 14 days cooling off period and reapplied would she get the new increased bonus. I had a number of calls with Amex where they told me there wasn’t a cooling off period and she would be charged the card fee.
I raised a complaint which resulted in Amex agreeing that if she hit the different spend target (I.e. £10,000 in six months) then they would manually update her balance.
Now my question….. does anyone (Rob?) keep track of the Amex bonus changes and therefore know what it was increased to in October 2023? Amex have told me 75k but I thought 100k.
Thanks75,000 MR points for hitting £10k spend within six months.
The offer also included another possible 25,000 MR points if you spent anything in month 15 of card membership.
It was 75k for hitting the £10k spend within six months and a further 25k if you retain the card for 15 months and make a purchase in that month.
You did well to get that! Even if your wife had cancelled within the 14 day cooling off period, she wouldn’t then have been able to re-apply and get the SUB, you have to wait for two years again because it’s driven off the application being successful so cancelling doesn’t affect that. Also, there’s a fairly high chance the second application would have been rejected.
Thank you JDB and RK228.
It was a very surreal discussion with Amex about cooling off periods and whether that wiped out the application in full.
If I am honest, I didn’t think I would get her the additional points but they agreed as long as she didn’t cancel the card and hit the £10k spend ( which she has just done )
Thank you once againThank you JDB and RK228.

Thank you once againSoon, your wife will be able to ask for 75k retention!
Amex is correct in saying that cancelling your card within the cooling off period doesn’t wipe your application, but merely means you can do so free of any cost. Regulation doesn’t permit card providers to wipe or void an application; they still have to keep the application and your account records for five or six years.
