I’m a firm believer in public transport being funded out of the public purse and fares being set at affordable levels.
Given that you’re a public transport user, I’m sure you would say that. I doubt the residents of rural Ceredigion, for whom public transport is nothing but a rumour, share your enthusiasm. Perhaps if subsidies for transport in London were paid by Londoners instead of coming out of general taxation, the rest of the UK may be more sympathetic.
Agree, @jj, I never even look at tube fares, I’m too busy marvelling that I can tap my Amex and get a on a train within minutes at all times of the day!
Northern Rail emailed me the other week to advise me I was entitled to 75p compensation for my most recent cancellation, yet when I wanted to get a slightly earlier train home from Bolton a few weeks ago I had to fork out the full price of a new ticket 😡

Other than during the pandemic TFL gets very little if any subsidy from general taxation for its day to day operations.
The bulk of the cost is being met from passenger fares and a business rate supplement charged to certain businesses in London.
Only about a 1/3rd of the cost was met from general taxation.
Remember London pays more into the tax pot that it gets back from the government in terms of grants and investments.
And a huge swath of the money spent was actually spent buying goods and services from companies outside of London keeping businesses open and people in work many, many miles from the capital – including Wales.
My only problem with it is that it doesn’t run frequent enough to T5 during asocial hours. Waiting for a train for 25min at 6am is not a very attractive proposition to me.

Just the first train to T3 and change there to the HEX for T5.
There are only 2 Lizzie Trains to T5 what ever the time of day.
The biggest gripe for me is the inflated cost of the elizabeth line.
Strokes 60+ Oyster card and smiles……..
Crossrail was a game changer. If you want convenience use HEX, if you want super cheap use Piccadilly.
