Hey all. Might be wrong channel and/or already covered but would love a second opinion.
I’ve today got accepted to Barclays Avios meaning I get an upgraded flight in a years time.
Me and my wife both have separate Amex (the free blue one) as we believe we’d rather do more long hauls than fewer better ones.
However. We would love to try a business class flight one day!!!
So, with our voucher in a years time with Barclays how would you recommend we play this*.
Would we have to upgrade to Amex premium/black card? Guessing it’s not a return flight for the upgraded seat class, so would our 241 mean that we have to find our own flight home? Any help will be most appreciated on how you would play this but we’re excited at a potential of a business class flight*We are looking at business for South America, Singapore, Vancouver, SA, Japan or Malaysia. All are on our list and we’re not too fussed which in which order so will go with any if it increases our chance of a business flight
You cannot mix an Amex 2-4-1 with a Barclays voucher.
There are some great articles and threads on the Barclays voucher on here, which you’d benefit from reading, but basically the upgrade voucher can upgrade you by one cabin for one person, return, or for 2 people, one way (starting in the U.K.).
If you did want to use the Amex 241 for business class then yes, at least one of you would need to get the BAPP card with the £300 annual fee.
Using the upgrade and 241 voucher on the same trip (which would require 2 separate bookings) would leave you with half the 241 voucher unused, though you could use that at a later date, subject to the terms of the voucher (also lots of info on here).
One option would be to make 2 separate bookings, availability permitting, with the 241 voucher holder using it for a 50% avios reduction, and the other person using the upgrade voucher (doesn’t have to be the voucher holder for this one).
Do some research for your destinations to avoid complications when you come to book, e.g. the 241 can be used on BA, IB and EI, but the Barclays only on BA so you are limited to where BA flies to, on the outbound leg at least (if using one voucher for 2 people, one way).
