QED – this post has basically confirmed everything I said.
PS Whilst you may argue nothing you have said is demonstrably inaccurate, none of it is particularly useful in the context of the OP’s thread and just serves to obfuscate.
PPS You DID tack on a 10 day diving holiday
PPS An interest in visiting Cenotes does not necessarily equate to cave diving
PPPS All of the above is offset by the fact that you have indirectly alerted me to an old @Froggee post about Tenerife that I hadn’t read before, so TYVM for that @cin3 – chapeau!
PPPPS sorry – for anyone interested I should have included the link to the vintage @Froggee trip report!

I’m sure it was well-meaning advice, just not very sensitive to OPs situation 🙂
Given that:
a) CDMX is worth visiting
b) The Yucatan Peninsula is worth visiting
c) OP has two weeks at their disposal
d) OP is unlikely to return in the foreseeable future
Then I would much rather try to fit in both destinations to see their “greatest hits”, rather than immersing myself fully in just one and missing out on the other. If they absolutely love one of them they can then make a bigger effort to make it back a 2nd time.
The average first-time family visitor may well prefer DF and Oaxaca than DF and Yucutan. In fact that’s a very common itinerary for families and shouldn’t be ruled out just because there are cheap flights from Europe to Cancun.
You’ve had tons of advice already OP so not sure mine will add to the excellent words already posted.
However a couple of years ago I also spent two weeks in Mexico one summer. I did 4 by 4 by 4, i.e. 4 days in Yucatan, 4 days Oaxaca, 4 days Mexico City.
For Yucatan I arrived in Cancun and stayed downtown, though the resort hotels did look quite swanky.
This segment included travelling to Valladolid for a one night stay in order to have a quicker journey time to Chichen Itza.
I then flew to Oaxaca where I ate and drank very well and took in the architecture, with a half day trip to nearby Monte Alban.
And in Mexico City I did food, drink, visited Teotihuacan, for which I would recommend the bulk of a day to get to and from and have sufficient time to explore.
It’s possible you could fit more in but I am not the type to lay by the pool or beach and do nothing so I imagine adding a lot to your itinerary would be quite exhausting and stressful.
