Have a trip booked in a couple of weeks.
Any particular tips / suggestions for things to do / places to eat?
Many thanks
That’s a very broad question! What do you like doing? There’s scope for quite a variety of activities in all three cities.
E.g. museums, walking tours, day trips, river cruises, sporting activities.
Have to say, as OH is a military history geek, I’d be interested in visiting the Eagle’s Nest from Salzburg, apparently you can only do that in the summer months. Nice mountain scenery would be a plus for me.
We’ve also done walking tours in Munich & Vienna (through Viator) and really enjoyed them. The fabulously-named Schatzkammer (Imperial Treasury) in Vienna is a must-do if you like weird/wonderful historical objects, I’ve done it twice now!
We enjoy historical /cultural sights, real foodies (so keen to experience local cuisine) and just experiencing the local culture. It’s our first trip, and therefore probably keen to stay local to the centre on this trip.
Schatzkammer looks interesting! Thank you!
From Vienna it’s an easy hop over the border to Bratislava – from memory an hour on the train and not much longer on the boat. The old Town in Bratislava is worth a visit.
If you like culture and history you can easily fill a couple of days in Vienna’s museums and galleries. Just the Egyptian collection in the ancient history museum is incredible and takes a couple of hours to see.
You can usually get tickets for classical or jazz concerts very reasonably, often performed in beautiful old churches.
If I did one touristy thing in Munich I’d probably make it the Residenz. There’s a lot of rooms so the museum ticket on its own may be worthwhile rather than adding on the treasury and theatre.
Also in Munich, the one traditional food/drink thing I’d do is the Schneider Bräuhaus (Weisses Bräuhaus Im Tal). It’s a real mix of tourists and locals. The beer is excellent and the food hearty.
The Augustinerkeller for me in Munich. But honestly, the food is excellent of very similar in the beer venues all over the city.
In addition to the Residenz, I’d also suggest Nymphenburg Palace, but it depends really on what you like. If you like art, the Neue and Alte Pinakotek are excellent though I always found Haus der Kunst to be a bit different.
When you say a couple of weeks, if you are in town when the Kaltenberger Ritterturnier is on, you seriously cannot miss it. It’s visually epic and the food outstanding.
