Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club New amex 241 how much is an Avois worth?

  • 16 posts

As you’ll know with the new Amex 241 you now have an option to use less cash and more Avios, (perhaps this was only if going as a solo traveller).
Im sure Rob wrote something on how to work out the best value cash vs points but I can’t locate now. Any ideas?

    1. Use a standard value of 0.8p or 1p per avios and convert each option to cash.

    E.g. option A: 10000 avios + £100 >>> £180 at 0.8p, £200 at 1p
    Option B: 15000 avios + £55 >>> £175 at 0.8p, £205 at 1p
If you value at 1p pick A, if you value at 0.8p pick B.

    2. Come up with a value for how much you would pay for the flight in cash, then work backwards for each option

E.g if you’d pay £250 for the above flight, then option A values 10000 avios at 1.5p, while option B values them at 1.3p, so pick A.

The less cash and more Avios options are a rip off. HfP guide to Avios value here:

Personally I value assuming I can get a CW seat for 1800 quid which is about the maxim7m that I will personally pay. Anything more than that cash, I opt for premium economy or (more often) another airline. Right now that pretty much means never flying BA in CW for cash as seats are way more than that.

Not necessarily, you can easily pick up a £350 cash ticket for 10x less £35.
