Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points
Hi,
I currently have a normal Amex BA Card and I’m just short of hitting the 12k spend for a companion ticket, which I will do before the 1 Nov. However I ENQUIRED with AMEX about upgrading to AMEX Premium BA card, to get into Pre Eco, or Business Class Reward flights, and was told I can upgrade and will get the Companion ticket immediately, as I’ve met the 10K threshold as long as I do this before the end of October.
So my question is, If I do this, upgrade, pay the £300 fee and receive my Premium 2-4-1 Companion Ticket, could I then downgrade and get a refund pro rata of the £300 fee ?
And would the companion ticket still be valid ?
Loop hole ?
Any ideas
Cheers
Why downgrade … cancel and get a nectar instead. Get the BAPP in 2 years time with a sign up bonus.
So once the Companion ticket is issued, I can cancel Amex card, but the Companion ticket remains valid for 2 years with BA, it gets loaded to my Avios/BA account without any issues by not having AmEx
Is Amex still doing the pro rata refunds? Can’t keep up with the delays to rolling it out…

Yes
They will likely refuse the downgrade, in which case your only option would be to cancel if you want the fee back. You need an Amex to pay the taxes and fares on a companion voucher booking. Can be someone else’s but make sure you have access to an Amex if you do cancel, otherwise your voucher is useless.
