Forums Payment cards American Express New £300 Platinum dining credit July 2022

    Went to Tattu on Sunday.
Statement credit of £150 was on my card account today.

Took nearly two weeks for The Ivy last year.
Not sure why such a large difference in turnaround times.

Do NOT bother with CUT at 45 Park Lane – mediocre and overpriced steak, service was terrible (4/10), went for the 1KG porterhouse cut which was £380 by itself and not worth the price at all. I do recommend Lutyens Grill at the Ned if you want a steakhouse in London on the list, Blacklock and Goodman if you can venture outside the platinum dining credit list 🙂

Don’t bother with new street grill in London either. Good service and wine but meat was disappointing.

I used pocket concierge (the only way to use the credits in Japan I believe) recently in Tokyo and had a good experience both times but especially makiyaki ginza onodera. It’s nice to arrive and leave without having to get your wallet out!

Does anyone have any experience of gaining the 2nd lot of credit within the same year as it was my understanding that it was calendar year?

Yes, calendar year (Jan-Dec), not membership year (Sept-Aug for you)…

Looking for a recommendation in London a nice place to visit on a solo dining experience just myself and my kindle for a few hours. Not looking to blow 150 on a single visit

    Greatly appreciate any recommendations

This has probably been asked somewhere in the 20 pages so apologies in advance.

I now the credit is per account but can it be used by either the main or supplementary card holder? I have the same question about the Harvey Nicks credit. It’s more likely that my wife will shop in HN than I would so need to know if I’d have to give her my card.

Main cardholder only for HN & dining credit. She could add it to her ApplePay if it’s important for both of you to have access to the main card & you are not fussed re who spent what and when… etc.

Thank you. I thought I had read that somewhere. It seems a daft limitation.

This has probably been covered before, but in case anyone was wondering. The Dining credit stacks with other Amex deals.

Went to the Delaunay in Aldwych on Friday. There was also an Amex offer for spend £100 get £20 back. Received £170 back yesterday.

So basically got paid £20 to go have a nice lunch with my wife.

So after a disappointing experience at the Savoy Grill last year we tried Quaglino’s this year. I’ve been wanting to try it for some time, but wasn’t willing to risk pure hard cash! 🙂

Maybe it’s because it was a Saturday night, but the crowd was very TOWIE and show-offy.

Service was terrible – we got our starters before the drinks arrived, the waiter had completely forgotten to put the drinks order through and had to ask us again what it was we wanted, they had no idea who’d ordered what so they were shouting out the dish names as they’d arrive, unused wine glasses got collected halfway through the meal, water never got refilled…

My tuna tartare starter was absolutely minuscule but the other starters were of a decent size. The mains were all decent and filling.

But at £270 for three starters, three regular mains, two cocktails, a couple of sides and service I will not be returning. Oh, and a £15 charge for the live music.

    So…Manchester

We did Hawksmoor before Christmas and thought it was ok
The Ivy gets awful food reviews (else I’d utilise the additional Amex credit)… 20 Stories getting similar reviews last I looked

That leaves Tattu or Erst, so we’ve booked Erst… will feedback after (and also grateful for any feedback! 🙂 )

Tattu is awful. Just bland and watered down food. It’s the ambience that is its selling point but the food is bad bad bad.

Not sure why anyone might have any expectation that Hawksmoor would be any better than ok or the Ivy have decent food. The £150 credit appears to change people’s judgement which it shouldn’t. Both chains are relying on some old reputation, a general lack of discernment and fear of stating the emperor has no clothes.

Pleasantly surprised with the “pocket concierge” system for booking restaurants with this offer in Japan – all restaurants booked and charged via the pocket concierge site get the credit, but it won’t apply if you pay the restaurant directky. I made the booking last year which was charged immediately, so counted for last year’s credit. Went to the restaurant this week and it was excellent and easy as could be (Maison FUJIYA in Hakodate). Ordered some wine and was expecting to settle the extra bill at the restaurant, however they charged me automatically via pocket concierge instead, so the wine will come for free too via this year’s credit. I don’t know if it always works like this – some restaurants might settle additional charges themselves instead.

I’m not sure where I gave the impression that I was expecting anything – I was just giving my opinion based on the information available to me (either through my own visits, or reviews from others).

FWIW though, Hawksmoor Manchester generally gets good reviews, in my experience though, it was just ok (mainly from a VFM perspective) but I appreciated the opportunity to try it for myself given the credit would’ve expired if I hadn’t gone there, and I’m now feeding it back – though from what you say, it sounds like everyone already knows 🤷🏻‍♂️ sorry about that 🙄

I think The Ivy varies significantly based on which location you visit. I’m generally happy with Edinburgh, having visited for breakfast, brunch, and dinner at various times. It’s a lovely environment, the staff are great, and while the food isn’t winning any awards it’s enjoyable enough and normally nicely presented.

The Ivy in Glasgow I visited once and it was dreadful (food and service). I’m starting to think other venues are more Glasgow than Edinburgh!

Anyone been to Botafumeiro in Barcelona?

A couple of times, for lovely long lunches. Thoroughly recommend it. Very old school charm.

It’s not trendy, or Asian-Fusion, or like anywhere that opened this century.

But it has a wonderful vibe, charming service, and outstanding fish and seafood.

What should I budget to spend per head? Many reviews comment on bad value for money.

Oh the old value for money equation!! It’s about more than just the cost of the ingredients…..it’s a unique experience.

Yes, you can eat for much less in Barcelona. Is it worth the money? Absolutely.

If you are drinking, and having a decent meal, I doubt the Amex credit will feed much more than 1 person.

If you share a starter, have 2 light mains and no alcohol, the credit will cover 2 of you.

Just over a week ago I did a dining transaction in Spain, no credit yet. In experience do overseas ones take longer than UK?
