Any recommendations for the Madrid restaurants please?

I have been looking at this for December – last chance for my wife to use her credit and the choice is poor. There are 16 restaurants on the Plat list, and 130 in the Michelin but only one in common – Corral La Morería. The Michelin isn’t the be all and end all but it’s a generally very reliable guide with restaurants right across the price spectrum.

I did look at the other fifteen (although not all are really restaurants) and struggled! The majority form part of two chains and either look like no gos or very expensive vs. quality/reality.

We just came back from a Madrid to Buenos Aires retun trip and went to 2 of the restaurants on the list. I had a look at the one you mentiioned but didb’t really fancy the flamenco show aspect. We ended up going to Bibo which was a very modern and bright restaurant and the food was good. Spent about £100 between 2 of us which was pretty good value. On the way home we went to El Barril de las Letras which was also not bad. £100 spent on that meal too so after the rebate a total of £50 out of my own pocket spent. Can’t grumble!

@Teddy, that’s just because the offer is guaranteed until 31/12/2024. You can use it for 2023, and again in 2024.

    Thanks for confirming!
I just got the Platinum Card and was also confused by the 2024 expiry date.
    Better get a restaurant booked…

I used my Overseas DC this year at Miller & Carter Frankfurt. Statement narrative that triggered the credit for me:

    “MILLER & CARTER FRANKFU FRANKFURT”

I don’t know if their online gift card purchase will trigger the Overseas DC, but here is the link:

    https://webshop.millerandcarter.de/shop

When you click through the shopping cart process, the address given is:

Miller & Carter Gaststätten Betriebsgesellschaft mbH Miller & Carter Alte Opera, Hochstr 42 60313 Frankfurt

Maybe try a small amount and see what comes up on the bill and if it triggers the DC?

No guarantees, so Caveat Emptor 🙂

The Corral de la Morería has flamenco in the same building, but the restaurant on the Amex Plat list is a separate four table restaurant of exceptional quality. It has a single set menu at €95 for nine courses plus a few surprises. It’s original, very well presented and extraordinarily well executed. The wine list is extensive and very reasonable indeed.

What do readers think of options in Hong Kong, For all the times I’ve been there I rarely get lucky with my restaurant choices. Being in HK I ‘d really prefer to eat Chinese, particularly Dim Sum.

We went to Mott 32 with my son and girlfriend on his recommendation – we had the Peking Duck for starter (has to be pre – ordered). It was exceptional. Had a really lovely evening.

Datapoint: I couldn’t use the abroad dining credit for this year yet. I had a close friend visiting Madrid, so thought of trying to pay his dinner.

I called Corral La Morería, booked dinner plus show option for 2 people. I had credits from 2 cards to use so I asked the lovely operator on the other end to split the booking and make 2 separate booking. There were few options to pay, I chose to pay over the phone. Total for 2 people came to around 230 euros. There’s option to pay online, but that included only the show price, on phone I could pay for dinner as well as the show.

The charges haven’t yet posted in the account and I’ve not received the credits yet. However, I received “you’ve redeemed a benefit” email on one of account. Hopefully will receive the credits on both, fingers crossed, else a very expensive gift for the friend.
I don’t see a reason why it shouldn’t work for a future booking paid over the phone now.
YMMV, all the best and merry Christmas.

I’ve successfully redeemed this year’s international credit for a gift card at Amisfield (Queenstown, NZ). I called them using Skype and explained what I wanted to do. Statement credit took 10 days or so to post. I plan to use it this time next month.

You mean charges have posted, but not settled yet. If the payment wasn’t posted, Amex wouldn’t be sending the email for offer usage.

I don’t see a reason why it shouldn’t work for a future booking paid over the phone now.

The issue with that is the massive risk of sharing the card details with a stranger.

I don’t see the charges yet online, processed or pending. However, I did received Apple wallet notification of the charges. Will see if the charges appear in next few days.

Don’t have to share card details with any strangers, I paid over the phone directly to the restaurant reception.

@bj We did above and beyond at hotel icon which was good for dim sum early this year. Also tried out shangri la which I would say was poor. Careful when booking as they sometimes want a deposit which can be processed differently and not count towards the credit

Thanks, in the end we decided to play it safe and have decided to pmay it safe by booking Aaharn, a Michin-starred Thai place. We found the long tasting menu appealing and are much looking forward to it.

Bangkok datapoints: Used the credit without issues at Blue Elephant Sathorn and Baan Dusit Thani. As always fkkd at lue Elephant was solid but not spectacular but reason to go there is the building and the atmosphere. It’s a HiSo hang-out to see and be seen. Three if us had a light lunch for £105, drinking only water. Baan Dusit Thani is a complex of about 5 separate restaurants on the right heading down Soi Saladaeng from Silom Road. Technically the restaurant that is included is apparently Dusit Gourmet but it billed as Baan Dusit Thani so I’m guessing all the restaurants, food shop and cooking school might do the same. Anyway we went to Dusit Gournet and once seated were presented with both the Dusit Gourmet and Nomad menhs. I had burger, fries, salad and Coje from the former, my partner grilled shrimp (quite large), steamed rice, salad and Cone from the latter. Food was very decent and total was just under £33 so the credit could go far here.

@BBbetter I tried to reply earlier but went into moderation, might pop up later.

Latest update is that charges are posted and processed on both the cards. On my card cash back is received as well. On OH card, cash back not received yet but we got the abroad benefit utilised email so would get soon I think.

Also, I gave the card details directly to restaurant reception and paid over phone, not handed card details to anyone else.

Hi all, has anyone got any recommendations for using the dining credit in Singapore? I haven’t been back since the last stop on my gap yaaaaaaah in 2007, when I’d blown my budget completely in Borneo (Uncle Tan’s and climbing Kinabalu), and ended up limited myself to the cheapest food I could make for myself in the hostel kitchen. I’m looking forward to seeing Singapore properly on less of a budget this time (after 2 cancelled covid trips). All recommendations gratefully received! TIA!

Used our 2023 credit on 31st December for a lovely Sunday roast at Gaucho. Within minutes I received an email from Amex saying my dining credit had been redeemed.
However the offer is no longer available to save to my card. I’m getting a message saying the offer has been “recently redeemed” on 1/1/24. Anyone else seen this before?

Tiffin room is popular. Jaan is also good. Being a small city, most restaurants in the list are those within luxury hotels. But there’s something for everyone.

Tried Blue Elephant on NYE eve and it was good but not great. Had the Thainess menu which was a nice tasting menu with different flavours and good if anyone hasn’t tried Thai very much.

Booked into Café Sydney for later in our trip after the glowing recommendations on here.
