Forums Payment cards American Express Platinum card loyalty offer

  • davet 107 posts

I signed up to the Platinum card in November for the 75k sign up bonus, I have managed to claim the UK and abroad dining benefits, a few lounge passes a hotel upgrade and quite a few statement credit offers

I was about to cancel for the pro rata refund while I am still massively ahead and they have just offered me 50,000 MRP not to cancel today, I can cancel straight after cashing the points in, is this normal?

In recognition of your loyalty to us I would like to offer you a 50,000 Membership Reward credit to your account. You do not have to do anything; the additional Membership Reward points will be visible on your account within the next 24-48 hours. Do I have your final consent to submit your offer or shall I proceed further with cancellation?

What are the conditions for the points? that I do not cancel today or that I must remain active for a period of time
The only condition is you do not cancel your card today. There is no time frame to stay active with us.

Yes loads of people do it. Try and wait a few days so they’re less likely to flag your file for abuse

Essentially, it helps that agents retention statistics

Yes, Amex doesn’t really seem to understand the concept of loyalty. It ‘works’ for them in that if you accept the 50k they put you down in their metrics as a ‘retained’ customer even if you cancel and they conveniently ignore the cost of that retention. In their next quarterly figures they can then report to investors that new customer acquisition and retentions remain strong. Magic.

Good for you, but that’s just crazy. I can’t get a retention offer and have held the card for 2 years. Meanwhile everyone else seems to be getting paid to cancel it. How can Amex carry on like this?!

Even when pro rata ends later this year. I can see huge retention offers being tossed around by Amex a few days before anniversary.
