35k offered by chat for me. Fee charged about 3 months ago.

This is my 3rd retention offer, with just over a year between each one. First 35k, second 50k, third 35k.

Never done a referral on this card, and use it for day-to-day spending, although not a high spender.

Offered 50k MR by live chat, no conditions – had the card for 3 months to the day nearly.

I was offered 35k retention bonus last week, which I accepted. But I am yet to see the points in my account. I contacted the chat again yesterday and was told that it can take up to 5 working days before the points are credited, however today is the 6th business day since the offer and no signs of the points. Does anyone know how long it takes for the points to be credited?

I have the free American Express Rewards Credit Card, has anyone been offered a retention bonus on that?

I’ve read back a few pages, are some of these straight points or do you have to spend a certain amount in a period of time to get the retention bonus?

Of so I better wait a couple of months as I’m about £2500 away from the 241 voucher on my BAPP card. Low spender here!

Thanks @Aquarius12 & Djembo. I contacted Amex again and they confirmed it was due to an IT issue. The issued the points again which were in my account instantaneously.

I’d say it would be quite unlikely to get one on a free card. For Plat, they all seem to be straight offers, with no spend requirement, and not even an obligation to actually keep the card the whole year! Although from October, when there are no longer pro-rata refunds, that will change. I got 10k on Gold with no spend requirement at my anniversary date.

For the BAPP, I have seen offers on this forum of spend £3k in 3 months for 10k, which is pretty good when you’re already getting a companion voucher.

Just to confirm, you got 3 retention offers in the space of a year? I’m guessing accepting an offer to stay doesn’t come with any clause to say you can’t cancel for another 12 months?

Newbie here, I’ve had my BA premium plus for many years, but have never considered cancelling, so didn’t realise a ‘retention bonus’ was a thing!!! Should I be asking for this every couple of years?

35,000 for me on the chat today, annual fee due within the next month.

Just for clarity – how do you avoid losing the amex points on your card if you don’t get a retention offer and end up proceeding with the card closure? Is it best to convert them to something like Avios before making the call?

Ideally yes, I would suggest converting them prior to cancelling however the reality is that you have 30 days following the cancellation of the card – although once you cancel you are limited to just transfer partners or statement credit. So you can’t use it on stuff like retailer gift cards (although this is not relevant to most readers of HfP anyway who understand the value of MR points).

Remember that one of the key benefits of MR points is the flexibility they offer to transfer to any partner. Whilst you are cancelling the Platinum card, it is possible to sign up for the free Amex Rewards card which would keep your points active with no annual fee for you to decide to transfer at a time of your choosing.

Newbie here! Rang up to cancel platinum card, or switch to Rewards Gold. Couldn’t offer the downgrade as they said the system didn’t show it. Immediately offered 35k retention rewards points, or offered to process the cancellation. Took the retention rewards bonus, and it’s already showing in the account.

May still cancel as the annual renewal will be paid for next week, but IIRC this will be paid back prorated if I do? Anyway, for now, the extra points is a welcome addition

50k offered straight away, 1-2 months away from renewal and never had a previous redemption offer.

No, there was just over a year between each one. So, I had 3 bonuses in just over the space of two years.

There are no conditions attached to the retention bonus, you’re free to cancel the day after it arrives if you want. Amex might not look too kindly on it if you do though.

Chat said flat no for me. Only had the card 4 months or so. Using the restaurant credit then will try again and cancel.

I was offered 50k which has already added to my account (around 40 hours after). I’ve had my Platinum for less than a year but had a BAPP for around 2 and a half years

Whilst not the free Amex Rewards Card (which I also have but can’t cancel because I still have a sizeable amount of MR points that I don’t want to transfer) I was offered 2 avios per £1 spent for the next 3 months on the British Airways Avios credit card (free one). Managed to make a very nice use of that because I was right at the beginning of my 2-4-1 spend cycle. Put through nearly 12k of transactions yielding just over 23k Avios. Intend to upgrade to BAPP at some point to trigger 2-4-1 and will then decide whether to keep it for the year ahead of the October 2nd deadline, leaning more towards retaining the paid Barclaycard because of the monthly payment and the ability to cancel any time with no loss.

Just been offered 50k through chat with little effort, I’ve had the card for about 10mths. At first I was offered a downgrade to gold, but when I said the gold card held no value for me I was offered the points

Absolutely baffles me how people have the cheek to ask for a retention offer after 3 or 4 months. Brilliant way to ruin it for everyone in the longterm…

I got 35k via chat. I’m coming close to renewal. Very happy with that.

    35k via chat yesterday.

Asked if the were any retention offers available and was immediately offered the £35k. I didn’t try pushing for any more.
