Well, I need to thank you all for inspiring me to blatantly ask for a retention bonus, ahead of the impending Platinum renewal we have on my wife’s card. I am normally pretty shy about things like that, but having read the last few pages of comments, I felt brave enough to ask outright, and was offered the common 35K points option, which I have accepted.

On chat – Said I was considering giving up the card due to increased fee and not really using the benefits. Asked for a retention offer and was offered 50k which I accepted. First time asking for a retention offer
35K seems to be the going rate. I just went on chat now, to say I was considering non renewal in October. Straight away was offered 35K. Chanced my arm for 50K but they didn’t go for that. It basically makes the card “free” for the next year. 35K transferred to Avios will pay for a flight that would’ve cost circa £500, then factor in the dining £150 and £100 at Harvey Nichols and I’m in credit. I’m a happy chap

The dining credit is £300, assuming you travel abroad.

How long will the points take to appear? I accepted 35k offer two days ago.
Has anyone received a retention offer within 12 months of the previous one?
What am I doing wrong here? I went via chat to cancel my plat to try and get some free MR and, after giving my reasoning, they just proceeded with the cancellation…! I stopped it by saying I need to transfer out my MR points first.
I’ve been with them for a couple of years and put £15-20k on the card per year.
Should I try on the phone instead?

I suggest that you speak to retention team during office hours as posted above.

No, it was around 18:30 when I went to the chat. If I try again today, should I just be bold and ask for a retention offer? I would just feel so cheeky doing that. Although, at least I have had the platinum for a couple of years, unlike some of the offers given here after four months!

Yes be direct, I would start on chat with something like ‘I’m considering leaving as I don’t feel I’m getting much value anymore. Have you got any retention offers?’

If you close your account now then Amex are kissing goodbye to up to £650 in annual fees as you get a pro rata refund. After 2nd October you’ll get no refund & they won’t have to cover travel insurance, Harvey Nic’s or dining credits for remainder of membership year. In short they will never have a better justification for bunging you some MR’s than they will this week!
No retention offer given on my Platinum this morning either.
35k this morning, last offer was August 2022 on my Gold Card (upgraded to Plat in April 23)
I gave the end of pro-rata refunds as my ‘reason’ for wanting to cancel. Agent tried to tell me ‘pro-rata refunds will still be applicable if you cancel anytime…until further notice’ (I assumed ‘further notice’ meant Oct 2nd, not indeterminably.) So I quoted the email amending the t&cs change to them. They told me not to worry about that ‘communication’ as ‘it has not been discontinued yet, and will continue for now until further notice”
Assuming these are stock responses, not some sort of internal shift to not apply/change the policy on refunds ending, but I found it a bit disingenuous that agents were ‘suggesting’ that pro-rata refunds might continue past Oct 2nd.
Either way I accepted the offer as I had not intention of cancelling.
Just logged onto chat on the phone app, wrote that I wanted to cancel due to the change in the terms and conditions, and asked for a retention offer. Was offered 35k points immediately. Had no intention of actually closing my account.
Got the 35k last week like most people. Only had the card 9 months but intend to keep it now.
