Me too just got 35k retention bonus – had card 11 months. They said that was maximum on live chat, but could change in future. I wonder if I should’ve waited until 2/10 – who knows….time will tell!
Four months to go for my renewal date, and I asked on the chat if there were any offers available to keep my business. Immediately offered 5k avios for £1k spend in 3 months, which I would have done anyway.
Also suggested that I call back nearer to my renewal date if I am still thinking of leaving.
I will call 1 month before and see what the retention deal is.

Thats for the BAPP right not the Plat. Also got 35k MR stating some refusals in UK lounges, barclays use and they gave me it without much effort. Was going to keep the card anyway so its a nice bonus.
Theres been a few confirmed mentions already of people being told that an email will be circulated that the pro rata refund will actually be extended way past 02 Oct. What a manure show.
Just accepted a 35k MR offer via phone (within 4 weeks of Platinum renewal).
The devil on one shoulder is sulking that it wasn’t 50k, but the angel on the other one is grinning.
If only every 5-minute call I made in life was that profitable!
10 months into my first year, renewal in November, accepted 35k MR points via phone (Brighton call centre).
50k via chat.
Higher than most of the 35k offers. Have you previously claimed a retention before?
Also offered 50k via chat (though it hasn’t posted yet) – haven’t claimed a retention previously

Yes a year ago. I had genuine complaints about the card offering, especially the offers.
Tbh it doesn’t matter what reason you give for cancelling, you either have retention offers on your account or you don’t. The only one I had was a downgrade to gold which I declined and just cancelled
Just had 35k on the chat. Exactly a year following my last retention offer. Put hardly anything through the card, use my BAPP for all spend.

That’s just not true, if you’ve held the card long enough and use the correct language you will get a retention points offer rather than just an offer of downgrade to gold.

thats the point, holding the card long enough will trigger a retention offer, not the correct language
downgrade to gold is offered from the get go for those people with no skin in the game and the CS know thatI agree. The language used seems to have no impact on whether “an offer is loaded on your account” (the text from a rep on chat). Nor, however, does it seem to correlate to time the card has been held for (just see this thread: some get it after a couple of months, some not after a year).
There’s either a complete randomness to it, which I can’t believe is the case for a financial institution, or some complex algorithm that takes into account a range of factors including your past history with AMEX, other cards held, spend and yes, including length of time with that specific card. But it doesn’t look like you can phone up on the second Tuesday five months after you got the card, say the magic phrase and boom, retention!
Phoned last week – my plat had renewed but I hadn’t yet been charged the fee (I’d actually forgotten when my anniversary was). I said I was thinking of cancelling and was offered a free downgrade to Gold as the ‘recommended option’. When I asked if there was any offer to retain me as a plat customer, I was immediately offered 50k MR instead, which I accepted and were visible within 48 hours on my account.
Spoke to chat, no offers available, but offered a downgrade to Gold with no fee for the first 12 months.
I’d receive a refund of c£400 for the Platinum. Tempting, as I’ve exhausted the dining/HN credits for this year, so I need to wait until 2024 now for another £300 + £50 of credits. I don’t have much use for the insurance/PP/hotel status. I would need to use up the £200 travel credit first.
Reached out by chat and they were initially quite tough – no offer other than to downgrade card! Tried again today and they immediately offered 35k (had already paid my annual charge earlier this month)

Did you try by chat the second time?
50k on the phone. Called to downgrade to gold as I dont feel I get enough use of the benefits. Travel insurance doesnt cover me as I have diabetes so have separate policy. Car hire is nice but I can pay for a policy. Fine hotels and hotel status I dont use. Priority pass and lounges I use but I’d get that with the gold card.
They asked if 50k points would change my mind. I said yes. May downgrade early next year before the pro rata refund stops and I’ve used next years dining credit….50k offered immediately on the chat when I said proposition wasn’t strong enough anymore. Fee due at end of October (bagged 35k last Dec).

Offered 50K straight off the bat via chat just now, which is adequate. Have had the card continuously since 2018 so I could have probably pushed it if I was feeling cheeky, but didn’t want to risk anything as I’d still like to try the lounge in T3 before I cancel proper. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences!
Today’s fee hike spurred me into action again – wanted to try to get another retention offer – or I’d have been happy to cancel it if nothing was forthcoming and wait the 2 years for a SUB.
Was first offered a downgrade to the Green card, when I turned that down they found 35K MR points in the sofa cushions for me.
