35k MR points offered via chat today. The representative said the bonus offered is based on card spend. If thats true then fair enough because I’ve only put £10k through it to get the signup bonus last year.
Reached out by chat and they were initially quite tough – no offer other than to downgrade card! Tried again today and they immediately offered 35k (had already paid my annual charge earlier this month)
Did you try by chat the second time?
Thanks! I tried by phone last week and only was offered a downgrade, they said there were no retention offers on my account. Tried by chat today and the agent was about to start the cancellation process having gone through how to transfer my
MRs etc when I last ditched asked directly if there were any offers to keep me as a customer and he offered 35k. I asked if they could do 50k and he said 35k was the max on my account. I’m clearly not spending enough with them to get the 50k!On that topic – I would not chase a higher offer by spending more:
I had an agent recently tell me he could see a 35k offer, and that a higher offer may appear “If you have any big purchases coming up, put it on the card – I’ll say no more”. I put another £15k through in the following 2 months, waited for statement date to come and go… and the offer did not change.
Therefore it’s likely a more complex algorithm than just spending a bit more. If it says 35k, you’re getting 35k IME.On that topic – I would not chase a higher offer by spending more:

Happy with the 35k but would definitely have cancelled today if they hadn’t offered anything.
Long time (25+ years) Amex holder of various cards – but minimal recent spend on Platinum. Was offered 35K today not to cancel – which I was told were worth £157 – and nothing higher available after asking. I took the offer, but will likely still cancel ahead of the fee increase.
Very specific monetary value – maybe something they’re trialling to counter cancellations due to the announced fee increase?

That’s because Amex value MR at 0.45p, as that’s what you get if you redeem for a statement credit, i.e. 1000 MR would give you £4.50 off your statement. Most HFP readers would likely value 1 MR at least 1p.
I just got offered 50,000 MR points to stay. Asked how long I need to stay and they said it was goodwill points and I can leave any time.
35K offered via chat this afternoon. Had 50k last Sept after only holding the card for around 3 months.
Have barely used my card this year (under £1k since March) as most of our spend was concentrated on our Virgin card to hit the 2-4-1.
Got the 50k offer yesterday. No mention of retention by Amex chat, it was called a goodwill gesture for my loyalty. I have a fair amount of spend via this card
Got a 35K points offer to not cancel. Might still cancel before fees is due once points post!
Spoke to Amex on their live chat. Said I was thinking of closing the account and wondered if there was any retention offer available which might make me reconsider. The agent asked if they could remind me of the benefits of the card. I said no thanks, I’m aware of the benefits, please tell me if there is a retention offer available..
They then offered me 35k points which I gladly accepted.

I think you went for the quick ‘ad free’ version!
If you listen to the alleged benefits and then tell them, oh dear, the benefits aren’t half as good as you had thought and you haven’t been able to use them etc. then you might be in the lucky dip (they probably call it an algorithm) for 50k or 75k.

Haha! I’ll try that when I try it for the BAPP, thanks.
read the BAPP thread before you put yourself through a long call listening to all the benefits
My fee is going to be charged today. I assume the pro rate refund is still the policy and we can cancel next year after using the dining credits etc?
35k via chat. Last renewed in September, with last retention offer being 50k in March.

According to HFP, yes before end Feb.

just asked through the app and they offered 50k points – been with them for 11months now. offer accepted.
Only 35000 for me through Chat. Asked if a better offer was available but told this was the maximum for me. Probably because I don’t put much spend on the card. Last retention bonus was this time last year after my new membership fee was charged. Still, I’m happy.
Asked in chat today with my membership year coming up in a week or so. Was only offered a downgrade to Gold or Green. Putting a reasonable amount of spend through the card (£10k+). Got 50k last year though, perhaps I pushed my luck?
Annual fee just got charged which reminded me to ask, so used Chat tool in the app to ask if they could offer me a retention bonus and happily accepted 50k points ‘goodwill for my loyalty’. This is a repeat of same circs and offer last year.
Upgraded gold to plat last year in Feb, fee was charged in March, so enquired about when it was due. Told that the fee would be charged in Feb (before the new fee comes into play), immediately said I was still considering renewing, and asked if any retention offers were available.
Offered 35k points straight away and accepted (happy with that given that I won’t be charged the increased fee until next year).
For reference, spend through the card for the year was <20k, could have put more through it if I didn’t have other SUBs to hit, could have possibly triggered the 50k point offer.

How much spend did you put through last year? When you say 10k+ is that closer to 10k or way more? 10k per year seems low for a premium card. If you look at the posts that are claiming they are getting 50k retention offers and back out the numbers, it sounds like they are putting through like 3K per month at least.
Also usually one retention offer per year, did you call too early?

About £25k this time around – to be fair last year I put more through but this year I had to fill up the Barclaycard Avios as well for the voucher. Perhaps I tried too early, will give it another try after they book the renewal fee.
