Forums Payment cards American Express Post your American Express Platinum retention offers here!

Hi all, I’m new to the concept of Amex retention offers. I’ve had the Plat for almost 3 months and I’m on the fence about cancelling/downgrading before the pro rata refund ends. Is a retention offer on the cards or is it strictly for annual renewals only?

Received my initial 75k points recently from hitting my spend target. Was on live chat earlier to cancel and offered 50k, result!

I tried it over the phone just now, they said they didn’t have one available. Oh well, I can try the typical route when it comes to the card anniversary :’)

Just queried any retention offer and was given 50k. Probably put around £20k through the card since April. Will try again before end of February to help decide if I want the pro rata refund.

35k offered and accepted via chat. Renewal is coming up next week and will keep the card for one more year at £575. Will likely cancel at some point this year to avoid next year’s fee increase.

How did you get the chat to load? It won’t pop up for me!

I had a retention last September. I’ve now decided to cancel, which I done via the chat. Was offered to be downgraded to the (I think gold card) for £60 which I refused. I went and processed the cancellation. Prorata refund amount is on my Amex Statement already – i’ve asked for it to be refunded to my bank account, so I expect that within a week.

I think it disappears on the webpage when they are busy. However i’ve alway found it to be available on the mobile app

Thanks – I didn’t know it was in the mobile app. Where is it in the app? The contact us page on the app just lists phone numbers…

It’s always ‘there’ on the bottom right of the screen when I log in on my iPad if that helps

Im thinking about cancelling the Platinum card before the pro-rata refund cut-off date.

How does one normally go about phrasing it in the chat to Amex to see if there’s a retention offer? Do you just directly ask them if there’s one?

Also, I still have a handful of membership points left so I’d assume it would be best to transfer them first before asking them?

I just said “I am considering cancelling, and wanted to check if there are any current retention offers”. They then offered me the gratefully accepted 50k.

If you’re serious about cancelling, then yes you’ll need to transfer out your MR’s, or obtain the free MR card to keep them live (but that won’t restart the 2 year clock for a new signup bonus).

On the Anroid app, when you select your card, its the Box/Message icon on the top right of the screen

Just directly say to them you are thinking of leaving and ask them for retention offers. You don’t need to transfer the points out before you ask

My year doesn’t renew until July, so thought I’d ask for an offer, got 50k! Will work out what to do with the card nearer to my actual renewal date. But that’s decent… if you don’t ask, you don’t get 😉

Got 35k instant credit by asking for a spending based offer. Annual spend £30-40k. Don’t know if that makes any difference?

I was offered a 75k MR credit today. The calculation provided was 75k MR = £337, over 55% of the annual fee.

I have decided to accept. I have had a BAPP card for many years but have only had the Platinum card for 3 months.

50K. 15K spend in 9 months. Been a member since 2001, various cards, no churning.

That’s a great offer, seeing as you should easily be able to get better than £650 value out of 75k MR. The £337 is if you use it for a statement credit, which is the worst use of MR.

Have you already hit the SUB from when you took the card?

Thanks. Yes – I agree that 75k should be worth more than that amount when converted to Avios.

I hit the SUB (£10k in 3 months for 75k) due to the need to make some large purchases in December. I had not intended to keep the card long enough for the remaining 25k bonus.

@nm5673, thanks for confirming. I haven’t hit the £10k yet, but I’m not planning to renew for the additional 25k. If they offered anywhere near what they offered you, I would certainly accept.

2 of my friends who signed up to Amex as per my referral back in December have been both offered 75k each. One has had the card for less than a month. Quite mind blowing to be honest considering some people in this thread have had the card for a decade or longer.

It is fairly extraordinary that Amex feels the need to offer 75k SUB + 75k retention inside two months on top of £600 dining credits for 2023 and 2024 and £100 HN credits. So £2200 to persuade you to take out and hold a card with a £650 still cancellable for 75% plus of that fee. Maybe the odd offer as well. Is that really sustainable? Does it smack of desperation?

Something will have to give at some point; grab what you can while you can!

I agree. I truly don’t think the card has enough value beyond the first year especially when the dining and shopping benefits have been devalued significantly due to inflation and priority pass only being useful if you can stuck up the reservation fee in the UK. However, the 75k + 75k + 10k from spending and 5k from adding the additional cardholder inside a month for 10k spend seems higher than many US sign up offers!

My wife was just given 50K via chat. No strings.
