Tried myself as I was still trying to decide if I want to keep the product for the rest of the year after the sign up bonus and was given 50k. Will most likely keep it as I have a number of trips coming up this year. Travel insurance and lounges abroad will be useful.

Just phoned up to cancel. Wasn’t offered a thing other than a free downgrade to the Gold card 🤷‍♂️

50k a week ago on chat, I can still refer.

50k on chat earlier this week. I’ve had the card since May and it was our main card until I referred my wife last month, so a decent amount of spend went through it. I’ll probably look to cancel it anyway soon.

35k on chat today. I’ve held this card since 2020 and used it as my main card for a couple of years, but have put minimal spending on it over the past year or so.

I was offered a Gold Card, Shall I call/Chat in few weeks. Not making spend on Amex Plat as I have VA+ card.

Did a live chat today, offered 50k , accepted it

I tried asking a few times, was only ever offered a downgrade and politely told to not try again, ended up cancelling. 😀

Got the 75000 initial SUB yesterday after holding the card for a couple of months. I asked via chat if any retention offers were available as I was thinking of cancelling, regrettably nothing offered except potential of downgrade to Gold or the free one.

The agent advised me to contact again towards my anniversary date (so Nov 2023).

I think I’m on a SUB deal where 25000 pts more will come in month 15 anyway as part of a deferred SUB. Am just wondering whether to retain until then or get back lion’s share of £650 annual fee and restart the two year SUB counter.

I have availed of £150 UK dining credit and £50 Harvey Nicks in the month or so I had the card in 2023 so will use up those allowances shortly for H1 2024 and maximise any value ahead of any cancellation.

In October a week or so prior to 1st renewal contacted them on Chat threatening to cancel and was offered 35k – which I accepted.
Since then I have spent around 25k. Contacted them today on chat fully wanting to cancel and was immediately offered 50k – accepted.

Yesterday asked to cancel via chat and offered to downgrade to free card – no incentive offered at all and CS was ready to progress with the closure. Have put c. £4k pcm through the card since holding.

There’s no benefit in being coy – straight up ask them is there’s any retention offer available.

Well, never asked before, but since everyone else seems to be doing it….

Mrs MacK said I didn’t really like the two dining credit restaurants in Edinburgh (true), and had travel insurance through my bank (true) and could get 1.5 points per £ as a supp on Mr Mack’s BA Amex….. so what retention can you offer?

Agent said he “fully understood” – and four minutes later came back with the downgrade offer!

    Oh well, some you win…

P2 – last retention offer was just over 12 months on an old platinum card which was closed shortly after. Had this new card for about 6 months and all she was offered was downgrade to free card, have put over £40k spend on the card.

That’s pretty shabby as some have reported applying at the new 75k initial SUB level in Oct/Nov and then getting a 75k retention within a couple of months after banking the original SUB.

It’s quite funny that they are now going to manage to brown off even those getting a measly 35k, let alone those being refused anything. Having upped the ante to 75k, even for complete newbies after a month or two, offering less than half even to people coming up to renewal seems effing rude!

A few months back, maybe last summer, asking for a retention after just six months might generally have been thought to be rather optimistic, but not impossible, whereas now, the sky’s the limit. They are making such a horlicks of the Plat product offering, plus its SUBs, retentions and on/off pro-rata cancellation that it should soon make a good business school case study. New management is urgently needed.

Shows what a rubbish product Plat actually is! Time for a complete overhaul me thinks

On attempting retention offers on Web chat, has anyone experience of trying over multiple chats if they don’t offer a retention bonus? Or do they keep a record of your request and your stuffed. I joined in the 75k offer bonus. Hit the spend in sub 2 months. Want to play on angle of the Pro rata refund Feb date.

Agents have no discretion, if you’ve asked outright for retention bonus & been denied then the answer will still be no the 57th time.

Coming up for renewal in March and just asked for an offer. Was given 50k points right away. Am I correct in that I can still cancel?

I use it as my main card and probably put upwards of £50k on it per year. Not sure if that’s wise though.

You can cancel even after the points
