Now. Not too late. Pro-rata refunds still exist right now, so call to cancel and hear the retention pitch.
If your card is a charge card then the pro-rata subscription refunds will still apply. It’s only credit cards that the new rule effects.
75,000 MR with no spend requirement!!!
I got the card 28 Dec 2023. Spent HN and Dining Credit before 31 Dec. I had spent the £10k by 23 Jan because I had been holding off on a large purchase. This got me the 80,000 MR point SUB bonus. Including spend and 5,000 MR points for a supplemental card I transferred out 95,000 MR to Hilton 11 Feb. Used the chat today to ask for a retention bonus

Me: Hi XXXX, I am thinking about cancelling my card. With the pro-rata refunds about to removed I am unsure I see sufficient long term value to justify the fee. Are there any retention offers that I could take advantage of?
Amex: You are right that there is a fee associated with this card. That makes sense to me. The value of the card and the benefits generally outweigh the annual fee. If you may allow, I would be more than happy to explain how the benefits and services outweigh the cost. Shall I?
Me: No thanks
Amex: No problem. I would like to offer you a 75,000 Membership Reward credit to your account. For reference: (75k MR = £337, over 55% of annual fee)
Me: okay. I do value MR points so will accept that retention offer.
Amex: Thank you for waiting. The offer has been enrolled, the points will be added 24-48 hoursAnd that was it. Took 2 mins and I have now earned 170,000 MR points in about 6wks. I’ve also got a bottle of HN Champagne and a £150 Ivy voucher. I’ll probably get another bottle of HN Champagne and will most likely use the dining credit in the next few weeks so that’s another £400 worth of value. And I can still cancel when/if the pro-rata fee comes in. Amex have lost their mind!?!
Very similar situation to @No Longer Entitled, no retention offers available for me, though. “Try in a few months” 🙂
I am slightly short of the £10k spend and probably just won’t get there before the end of February. Has anyone tried to see if they can get a retention offer and still keep the £10k one as well? Doubt it would work but worth asking if anyone else has done it successfully.

How short? Top up Amazon account with gift cards or one off payment to energy company and lower the direct debit?

Highly doubt it. Note also that council tax bill is coming up too if you’re able to pay using paypoint at co-op, you can use your previous year bill to make payment for this upcoming one as well.
Is there a way to find out the card membership year. Got the card and started spending around 20th December. Got charged the £650 fee in mid January. Technically I’d like to keep the card until Start of Jan 2025 as have a trip booked and the car hire protection and travel insurance comes in handy.
If I was cancelling I’d do so start of 2025 but don’t want to be stung with a £650 fee for privilege because I’m technically In a new membership year.
Why would you even boast about that, in the end it just spoils things for everyone.
I wasn’t boasting, I was sharing the data point. Without context however such data is largely irrelevant so I was providing context.
You will note that I did call it out as stupidity on behalf of Amex. But we are on page 25 of the thread and Amex haven’t shown any appetite to spoil it for everyone just yet. Maybe they are waiting for us to get to page 26?

It was definitely you who ruined it for me 🤣

I just messaged them to ask on the chat. They told me the date the new fee is due to come out, so I’ll cancel a couple of days before.

That date is irrelevant for you as you still get pro-rated refund. Cancel when you want to.
So I followed the guidance on here (thank-you!) and contacted Amex on chat. I’ve only had this personal platinum card since Jan (not getting many offers through despite spending >£12k). Said I was thinking of cancelling. Initially they offered a downgrade to a free card, which I refused. They then offered 75k points, which I accepted. Great outcome & wouldn’t have done it without reading this thread.

The date is entirely relevant, as the question was about not paying the additional years fee.
Personally I’ll make use of the card benefits up until the week before renewal, hence cancelling a few days before the new fee is due.
Tried on 1st Feb and offered nothing, tried again today and given 50k MRs thank you very much and no strings attached.
Took the card out in December and made the 75k SUB so this is a welcome bonus thank you.

Just followed this script and got 50,000 extra points. 🙂 thank you very much
I took out the card last August/September time, do you think it’s worth asking for offer as I haven’t put much spend through it, only to trigger the credits mainly as most spend is on my gold card, should I do it now before pro-rata refunds end or wait until renewal later in the year? I would rather want to maximise getting more MR points overall rather than having them now.

Call and say you’re thinking of cancelling, do they have any retention offers. I think what you get offered is near random, and defies any reasonable attempt to understand their business process. If they offer something worthwhile wait until they post and then call again and cancel for the refund. Amex positively encourage this sort of behaviour over retaining the card and paying fees.
Wow, despite Mrs Mack getting only a downgrade, I thought I’d try for me – using the question above verbatim.
“In recognition of your loyalty to us I would like to offer you a 50,000 Membership Reward credit to your account.
“For reference: (50k MR = £225, over 35% of annual fee)”
Now if they’d offered that to Mrs MacK she’d have jumped – she does love her Priority Pass card!

Similar fact pattern – got the card same time as you, but haven’t quite hit the £10k (will tomorrow) and not yet used any other benefits. Quoted the end of pro-rata fee rebates at the end of the month as reason for leaving, got 75k MR two minutes later.

Is it confirmed that the pro rata refund is ending on the 29th?

I said that was my reason for considering leaving. Agent confirmed that it was correct.
Edit to clarify – I specifically said 29 Feb and the agent was unambiguous that I was correct.
I’ve had a Platinum Charge Card since 2021 and am considering closing it before the renewal in September. I hardly use the card as I divide my spending between a Virgin CC and BA PP. Does anyone know if spending on the card makes a difference to retention offers? Would it be worth putting a load of spending on it before asking?
