Nearing SUB trigger…would you say a retention offer would be higher
before using HN/dining (“they’ve still got a lot to stay for”) or
after (“looks like they’re leaving anyway”)?!I would use “There’s no HN/Ivy/whatever in my town” to support the bid for a bonus! Though one time they tried to tell me that Harrogate was local to me, clearly they don’t have much experience of travelling around Britain on A roads 😂
Nearing SUB trigger…would you say a retention offer would be higher

If you don’t get the retention you want before the HN spend, say you’ll think about it and ask again after. The target seems to be 50k nowadays, or panic mode 75k for newbies who applied with last autumn’s bonus. It’s all bonkers.
I remember reading on Reddit from a former Amex employee that retention offers are automatically generated, and there’s no amount of sweet talking and flirting that would change the available offer at that time.
They always say they need to have a look to see if there is an offer on your account so this would make sense.
It is a little bonkers. To put it in perspective, 50k MR points = 50k avios, add £100 to that and it’s a return flight to New York, Dubai etc. In other words, “Here’s a (flexible) return flight to New York for £100″ for not cancelling right now this minute”!
Plat Member since 2020. Renewal up 10th May, last (and only) retention was 35k in August. Used chat to try for retention and was told nothing on account at moment and try again closer to renewal which is close anyway. Mostly use Barclaycard so Plat is only used for benefit spend. I can just about justify the fee at the mo as I’ve made use of travel benefits and had some referral bonuses. Will try again in a few weeks but likely to cancel if I don’t get an offer. I’m sure I won’t be missed!

From what I gather it’s correlated to the amount you spend on the card in your year, big spenders get larger bonuses, just from my experience on the gold. I would pump as much as you can through plat before renewal and ask a day or two before in your situation
Renewal due next week. Went to cancel via chat and 50K offered and accepted. No conditions – the points clear in a day or 2 so I could transfer them out and then cancel anyway right? Madness.
Has anyone had any retention offers when paying the annual fee monthly?
Was about a year since last offer (35k and monthly fee). But nothing on my account when i last called up, other than an offer of a downgrade to Gold…

35k last year and 50k this year.
Oh that’s interesting. I’ve never been offered anything and I assumed it was because I was paying monthly.

I am on pay monthly plan as well, had 35K points offered last year, and just been offered another 35K points when I asked about downgrade options.
Do people get retention offers on business cards or only personal cards?
You call or chat with them and ask to be on the monthly plan.

Apparently that’s been discontinued, but Retentions may have this offer…so will try them on Monday.
£54 a month is easier to swallow than £650 a year.Fully intended to cancel my personal Platinum this morning due to a ludicrously low credit limit. Pleasantly surprised to be offered 50k MRs without asking, so kept the card. Doesn’t seem to be any strings attached. How quickly can I actually cancel the card after receiving the 50k MRs if I change my mind in future?

The next day. But best transfer the points out before cancelling.
How so? I’m on it.

Knew my anniversary was coming up – though chat told me yesterday my annual fee was due 15 May, it was actually charged late this morning (with yesterday’s date).
Hoped on to ask for a retention offer. Immediately offered to downgrade to the fee-free card. Only upon prompting, they also offered to downgrade to Gold. I had 35k in September, so not surprised to not be offered points.
I asked about paying monthly instead – ‘there is no option to pay the annual fee on an instalment basis’.
Biggest surprise is the lack of any attempt to sell the benefits of Plat, the agent seemed all too ready to process the downgrade.
Renewal coming up in a week – so contacted via online Chat and just asked what retention offers were available. Was offered 35,000 MR with no conditions, so accepted.
Renewal statement issued this week with new £650 fee. Phoned up and spoke to lovely lady at cancellations in Brighton. Gave the usual list of reasons and was offered 35,000 MR points immediately, which I accepted, without any conditions. The lovely lady cited my membership since 2000 (as BAPP) and buckets of MR points as reasons to not want to loose me.
She also stated that by telling the automated voice man that it was “cancellations”, you would be connected to Brighton and not Manila, whatever your reason for calling.
We also had a good natter about living in London vs Brighton.

You received a retention offer in just 4 months and asked for another retention offer but now surprised that they aren’t ‘selling’ you the benefits of plat!
Upgraded the free rewards card to the platinum around xmas and hit the bonus threshold towards the end of March. Just chatted with Amex and they are offering 50k retention bonus.
Once these are credited, can I still apply for a downgrade and get a partial refund of the fee?
