As to the offers, I speculate (without any insider knowledge) that Amex might go half-house and have curve like arrangement i.e. minimum 6 month fees are to be paid when you take out a card and cancel before 6 months are off. This is still a good way to retain some customer base.

They have held it back most probably to announce at the same time as refreshing the offers.Am optimistic, but wouldn’t be surprised if fees goes up again and the card becomes a coupon book with money off a Starbucks coffee subscription.
Finally got a statement credit for a Melia stay in June, so have now cancelled my platinum. Queried any retention offer, and they said as I’d had one in January I’d need to wait until renewal was due. Went ahead and cancelled.

Hi everyone, it seems you all manage to speak to agents directly on the Amex App chat and get offered retention points via chat. However, I tried this today (1st time) and they asked me to call them back as they can’t discuss membership matters by chat. Is it a sign they are just not willing to offer any retention offer to me? It felt I was speaking to a bot rather than a live agent. Thank you
Mine was a call rather than chat and it was also offered, I didn’t ask about retention offers. May have got 50k if I had but who knows!
I opened a new platinum card in July to get the 40k bonus. Spent £6,000 and used the £400 voucher to pay for hotels for an upcoming trip to Mecca and converted the 40k to avios. I also used the £150 dining credit at Novikov (terrible, avoid) and the £50 Harvey Nichols credit. Also got a 5k bonus for opening supplementary card and upgraded my wife’s hotel and car rental accounts to Gold/President Circle. Other than that, I haven’t put a penny of any additional spending on the card.
Went to cancel the card last night and was offered a 50,000 points retention bonus!? Once they come through I will convert to Avios and cancel the card this evening.
I’m astonished at the “generosity”, though no complaints from me!
Yes, Amex works in all sorts of weird and wonderful ways. When this biggest of all but unadvertised ‘benefit’ is seemingly available annually to most who call, it is even weirder.

You can keep asking or say you want to chat to an agent, and then you’ll get put through.
I’d been on chat a few times over the last 3 months and no retention offers. I knew it was less than a year since the last one. Tried again on Friday which is just over a year since last retention offer and given 35,000 points.
Use the card for day-to-day spending and annual sub coming up – 50k MR offered almost immediately on chat.
35k no qualms, no reasoning. Simple opening message of “my year end coming up and just curious if there are any point offers to incentivize me to stay another year and not look at other options” then “security, code, i’ll check, i can drop 35k into your account 24-48 hours etc” “yep that’ll do, thanks”
Same day as I ask every year until I genuinely want to cancel mid-year, I just don’t actually spend on the card enough to trigger the 50k right now. But happy with what I do get from it and the 35k extra a year.
Just off the phone to Amex as I was considering cancelling the Platinum card. My rationale was that I have used both my Dining Credits and HN Credits this year, and it isn’t clear to me what will be replacing them.
The CS Agent initially said that the Credits will definitely roll over into 2025. When I asked why they had an end date of 31-Dec-24 and had dropped off my list of active Statement Credits for the first time since they were launched, he went away to check.
When he came back his stance had changed, “we definitely wouldn’t remove those benefits without replacing them”. Which is great but to what? He offered me 50k MR points to hang around and find out.
I’ve been a customer since 2014, had one retention offer of 35k back in 2022 and pay my fee monthly (hang over from initially trying to cancel early during COVID).
Odd – As I have used my HN and UK Dining Credit, yet they still appear on my app.

I was told that, my retention offer is 1 month before annual fee gets posted. I received 50k, 2 years in a row, which is equivalent to 50k avios, which is pretty decent.
I’ve just finished a chat. 35k MR offered and accepted (I’ve hardly used the card this last year apart from the statement credit kfcers, so 35K MR seems fair).
I called a few days after one year had passed since my last retention bonus and calendar reminder set for September next year.
Took out card in Nov 23.
