In Jan I called them few days prior to renewal – told them I wanted to close the Platinum Account but are there any offers – was given 50k points with no spend requirements.

And now, per another thread, they have closed all your accounts…
Yeah! Who would have thought after that they would
Kill me off!Asked about downgrading to Gold but was given 10k points with 1k spend requirements on Plat. Had already received 35k back in Nov, so took it.

Kill me off!I wouldn’t think there’s any connection but Amex giveth and Amex taketh away, both without obvious reason.
Had my card since Nov 24. Total spend around £11.5K, so I’ve triggered (and received) my 100K MR sign-up bonus.
Got on chat yesterday, told them I was considering cancelling because the bulk of my spend will be on other cards going forward. Asked about retention offers and was told there are none currently available on my account.
The chat agent did encourage me to ask again periodically.
I probably shouldn’t be so surprised, but what a royal pisstake to ask for a retention bonus after three month, right after triggering an all-time high sign-up bonus. Blows my mind.
Hey Marc, just to clarify—this is a website and forum dedicated to people looking for ways to get value out of the system, including through retention offers. The site has plenty of articles actively encouraging people to take advantage of new card offers, pro-rata account fee refunds, and (yes) retention offers.
I appreciate that many in this thread are longer-term members, but my situation is far from unique. Plenty of short-term cardholders have posted about their retention offer experiences shortly after receiving a welcome bonus.
It’s totally fine if you wouldn’t have asked, but singling out one person for doing something that’s widely discussed here seems unnecessary. We’re all here to share strategies and learn from each other.

There is always some naughtiness that come up about these amex cancellations.. never disappoints 🙂
@can2 – too true! There’s almost always more to it.
@Alex_A – yes, people share strategies etc. but many don’t seem to know where to stop/draw the line and then get all upset when the card provider shuts them down. They then plough through multiple layers of complaints seemingly totally oblivious to the unreasonableness of their conduct and insist the Ombudsman was wrong when the complaint isn’t upheld.Sometimes the short term gain costs quite a bit in the longer term. All these SUBs, retentions etc. have a big cost.

Thanks for clarifying what this website is for. And I’m extremely grateful for all the amazing content on here which has helped me a great deal to refine my strategy around credit cards, etc. Yet, I can’t remember reading an article from Rob to sign-up for a credit card and ask for a retention bonus after three months. JDB summed up the issue nicely in his reply above.
Oh and if you scroll back, you will find that I have indeed also called out others previously on this thread when the piss was in fact taken.

What’s with the necessity to ‘call out’ anyone? Why do you care? There are 44 pages of replies to this retention offer thread. Clearly a lot of people ask for a sweetener.
At what month would one not be ‘called out’? 1,3,6,12 or 24 months? 5 years? 10 years?

Could be one month, could be two months.
Three months? Could be.
Four months? I can see that happening, yes.
Eight months? That’s a realistic timeline.
Eleven months? Perhaps.
One year??? I can see that as a very real possibility.Got business plat and my renewal is coming up this month and was told there isn’t any retention offers but the option to downgrade to gold. I mustn’t be a customer worth keeping lol.
Have only been offered 10k with a £1k spend requirement, very easy to meet and do but frankly does not make me want to keep the card. Have neither accepted or declined, has anyone had this, not accepted and waited for a better offer, or is this my best luck?

Got same offer as you even thought last year got 35k for less spend.
I don’t think you’ll get a better offer tbh if you wait. It seems that their retention offers changes aren’t related to your spend and more likely just amex changing them on a whim
Another data point, ca. £200k annual spend on the Business Platinum charge card – offered £50 statement credit as a retention offer. Agent all but admitted retention MR point offers had been cut and that the £50 was the most they were able to offer at this time.

There has never been much by way of retention offers on the business cards but they have greatly improved the SUB terms for business cards.

I care because actions like this ruin it for everyone in the long run.
Just to be really clear, I don’t think there’s anything wrong in asking for a sweetener. I do it myself and I find it helpful that people have posted 44 pages of intel to manage expectations.
I’d personally ask for a retention bonus after 12 months – once I paid the annual fee. But I appreciate that others might do this earlier and that’s their choice. Asking for a retention bonus after three months, just when you received your sign-up bonus though simply seems a bit out of order to me (and apparently Amex, too).
Anyway, I think I made my point and won’t bring it up again.
Wife has just got her SUB of 80k having signed up for Platinum in December, was offered 25k for spending £5k in 3 months when asking about retention last night!

Bizarre attitude.
When you ask for a retention bonus, it is not the call-handler putting some kind of allocation of theirs on the line to generate these offers and therefore not being stolen by chancers.
It’s a purely algorythmic decision that is buried in their computer system and is a matter of don’t ask, don’t get. Noone is getting shafted, AMEX has made the points available for whatever business reason, you can probably get on the chat and ask every single day for a retention bonus and it won;t affect your eligiblity

some people on here are just salty they didnt get a chance

I was also offered (and accepted) a £50 credit for business card retention today, a few days before the annual fee renewal. Previous year it was £55. Better than nothing and helps to make the cost justifiable.
In the last year have managed to use the £200 travel credit, £150 Dell credit and various cashback offers totalling £340 so it is washing its face. I do also value the Times subscription and hotel status (Hilton in particular, as I write this from the deck of an over water villa at Conrad Rangali in the Maldives 😎). Finally the ability to earn points on business spend is good. Not the slam dunk other cards may be though, so always best to keep yourself honest with a cost / benefit analysis annually. As some have noted when they get their cards cancelled, AMex obviously does the same!
Got offered 25k MR points for £5k spend in 3 months today. I’ve been debating whether to move to the BA Premium as have some big spending (c.10k) coming up and thought it was worth using that towards the CV. Any suggestions whether to take the 25k offer and use the 5k spend or should I take out the BA Premium?

In both 2022 and 2023, I got double points for 6 months on Amex Business Gold. I go through around 50k spend per month, so you can do the maths.
Offered 40k MR points for £10k spend in 3 months…
Offered 40k MR points for £10k spend in 3 months…
Which is laughable when you consider the 75k for £10k spend for upgrading a gold card
