Not very – think I spent about GBP 10-12k and still got 35k points.

Reports would suggest that those who took up the jumbo welcome offer in late 23 / early 24 have been particularly favourably treated and the same is happening for those who only signed up in November 24 but are already getting retention offers of up to 75k! Bonkers but true.

It truly is bonkers, and doesn’t make much sense to me. I’ve had a couple of retention offers over the last 3 years and spend nowhere near the sums being quoted in this thread.

Many years ago (2005 – 2007) I worked for Capital One and though I am simplifying slightly, then had two products; (1) a 24.9% Sub-Prime card, and (2) a 6.9% Uber-Prime card. They made no money at all on the 6.9% customers, they never went into debt, never paid interest or fees, and those that did – the interest charges didn’t cover the costs associated with it. However, Capital One wanted the book because it balanced the overall portfolio and lowered their cost of borrowing… thereby making the Sub-Prime cards more profitable.

I was wondering if that might be why Amex is so keen (almost irrationally so) to retain Amex Plat cardholders as it balances the portfolio and lowers their overall cost of borrowing… even if the rest of their portfolio is still full of relatively Prime customers, Amex Platinum customers may be helpful for them.

All these great offers I thought I’d try on chat. Nothing. Just the option to downgrade to gold. Am I doing something wrong as it seems most are automatically offered 35-50k as standard. Worth a call?

How long have you had the card? When was the last time you had a retention offer and how much per year do you spend on the card?

6 months and never had a retention offer. Low spend so far under 20k.

35k MR to stay, accepted – spent 7k-ish in last 6 months

50k today, 13 months since last over and nothing offered 4 weeks ago when I last asked. Probably about £20k a year amongst myself and the kids who are supp holders.

Maybe related to drop off in spend, but £24k spent last 12 months and no retention offer today. Last offer a year ago.

Getting feeling this isn’t related to spend but more amex policy for the month. Both my wife. 3 months with platinum and me over 2 years with platinum offered 50k no strings. Was offered 75k last year.

As an aside amount I right in saying if I have a business gold and cancel the personal platinum my membership rewards points are safe?

Yep, but confirm with the agent that both cards are linked to same MR account.

50k offered and accepted last week. Around 13 months since I last asked. They didn’t even bother reeling off the benefits. This was via in app chat.

Opened Platinum in November 2024 – spent £7k on it so far. After seeing this thread thought I’d chance a retention offer, asked at the start of February and again today, both times only offered downgrade to gold.

Silly question, but how do you actually go about asking for a retention offer?

I’ve only had my Platinum for 3 months, but given the success of others on the forum who upgraded in November, I’m tempted to see if they have anything for me.

You just go onto Live Chat and ask. You can pretend you are going to cancel and want to see if there are any retentions offer. You only seem to get this offer once a year!

Offered a Gold Card and no Avios. Spend on the card is virtually zero in the last 12 months. Said I would think about it and will try again in a couple of weeks, but assume the result will be the same!

I tried today by first asking to confirm that I won’t lose my MR points because I have the blue MR card which I recently got in order to show I will likely cancel. They advised me to transfer to avios as they said I might lose the points. This was a surprise – can others confirm you don’t lose MR points as long as you have the gold or blue card?

I have spent £40-45k in LTM, much more in previous years when it was my main card before, and i have had the platinum card since 2022. I was offered 25k MR points if I spend £5k in 3 months. I said I was disappointed and did not take up the offer. I’ll probably try again in a while (currently have to hit SUB targets on new BAPP).

It seems there are times of the year when the retention offer is better from reading some of the posts. Has anyone got a view on this?

    Thansk!

was offered 25k points this morning, we spend about 20k pa

Think ill finally give it up……..

I cant really use any Avios benefits
The airport lounge access is a nice benefit (especially in a busy airport) but I can certainly live without it (and frustrating when they wont let you in when you cant prebook)
The Harvey Nichols benefits we’ve basically forced ourselves to spend (not particularly needing anything)
The restaurant credit (in Edinburgh) is poor – again we’ve forced ourselves to use it (Ivy was ok but 2x Gordon Ramsey Bread St was awful)
The travel insurance has been in the background since we downgraded our Nationwide account- £60 or so to replace
I have enjoyed Hilton Gold (mostly breakfast) and had a couple of upgrades with Hertz

So although i may have got my money back, its probably not money id spend in the first place. For 50k points id probably renew but may just get a Hilton Credit card if i need/want gold next year.

    There’s a Hilton credit card?

I got offered zilch around this time last month; have just now been offered 10k for 1k spend. Not too impressed. I asked if they had any higher offers for bigger spend, but was told no.

I planned to cancel in a couple of weeks anyway once my 25k bonus for spend in month 15 came through, so I took up the offer. Will give it another go after I’ve received both bonuses. More fool me if I might have scored a better retention deal after I’d received the 25k bonus, but I’m not travelling any time soon so will just make use of the dining benefit and pocket the fee refund.

Had my platinum card since 2021. Probably spend about £10k a year on it so not a huge spender. But enjoyed the airport lounges and Hilton gold.

Normally got 35k points retention each year (50k the first year)

This year was only offered the 10k points if spending £1k in 3 months as mentioned above so decided to go through with cancelling. Which they did, no other offers given. This was on the phone (and tried chat first too)

Unfortunately with the increasing difficulty of getting into airport lounges, as well as the increased price from when I originally signed up, it wasn’t worth it anymore

Had my card since Nov 24. Total spend around £11.5K, so I’ve triggered (and received) my 100K MR sign-up bonus.

Got on chat yesterday, told them I was considering cancelling because the bulk of my spend will be on other cards going forward. Asked about retention offers and was told there are none currently available on my account.

The chat agent did encourage me to ask again periodically.

I probably shouldn’t be so surprised, but what a royal pisstake to ask for a retention bonus after three month, right after triggering an all-time high sign-up bonus. Blows my mind.

Upgraded in Nov from gold to platinum for 80k upgrade bonus.

Offered retention bonus of 25k for 5k spend in 3 months. Agent on chat was about to cancel and I had to ask if retention bonus available.
