Hi,
I recently got a retention offer of 50k to keep card open as just days away from 1st full year. Spend has been around £40k. Points have been credited already but seriously considering cancelling anyway as could get 80k plus referral bonus if my wife (currently supplementary cardholder) got the platinum and I became supplementary cardholder. Any risks with this approach? Also, if I became supplementary cardholder, what happens to the hotel status as my wife isn’t a member it’s just me??
You keep the hotel status until they decide to remove them. It can easily be 12 months or more before that happens, and if you are a supplementary on your wife’s card you can just obtain the status again.
No notable risk with your proposed approach, it’s possible that the algorithms may frown upon it when it comes to a future retention bonus, but no one really knows. You can always keep your Platinum for a bit longer if it makes you feel more comfortable, making use of the new years benefits as well.
Thanks for your response that’s great. So essentially if even I became a supplementary cardholder holder we could opt to still use my hotel membership to get the status for this rather having to be in wife’s name?
50K offer given for me – spent less than £9K on it for sure. I’ll probably cancel it next year depending on travel plans.
Signed up for Platinum for 100k MR bonus in November – after hitting £10k spend target, suggested via chat in the App I was thinking of leaving and immediately got offered 75k additional MR with no strings…so 175k in two months!
Not sure the £650 fee is worth it for me on an ongoing basis as get work travel insurance/lounge access and I have BAPP for 2-4-1 voucher/higher Avios earning rate, but if there are reasonable retention bonuses each year alongside the car excess insurance and dining credits probably will keep me for longer.
Has anyone who doesn’t spend much on the Amex Plat received a good redemption offer? We have the card for the benefits but do most of our Amex spend on our BAPP cards.

I’m in my 3rd year now and will likely cancel in the Summer. Unless they add something decent for the loss of HN £50 from July. This year we will likely use £350 of the perks (3×100 dining and 1 HN). I have HSBC travel insurance, although for me the AMEX one is better.
Has anyone with the older charge card had a retention offer recently?

Ours is the charge card too – we’ve never asked for a retention offer.

I got refused one in Nov after a full year from the prior retention bonus. Will try again in the near future.
1 year since last retention offer, but no dice. Only being offered downgrades. Perhaps it’s because I put most my spend on my BAPP?
Update: Got 35k via chat today. Total spend since last retention offer is about £3k (I put most of it on my BAPP)
Chatted to Amex last week after a full year following the prior retention offer. Nothing offered – just monthly payments or downgrade. Will try again over the next couple of weeks and likely cancel the card if nothing is offered again. The retention points were the only thing making the card worthwhile for my use.
Update: Just been offered 35k MR points after a no-offer call late last year. Looks like I’ll keep the card for the time being.

Do you know what’s your spend been since the last offer? I’m just wondering where the 35k/50k threshold lies 😀
Got the Platinum card Jan 24 for 100k offer (75K + 25K in month 15). In the summer got a 35k retention offer. Got another 50K retention offer earlier this week. Spent around 25k on Platinum and 12k on BA card.
Will definitely keep the card for another year, hopefully the Harvey Nichols credit back is extended or replaced from July onwards.

Need to check but think about GBP 10k. I put most of my spend through other cards.
I never had a signup bonus to Platinum when I joined a few years ago (I had a different amex and switched too quickly, doh!) but after my fee posted a few days ago I just went on the online chat, asked if any offers were available and was offered 50k immediately by the rep. Seems like that is pretty standard. I spend about £20k a year on the platinum for reference.
Didn’t think it would be so quick and painless, wish I had tried sooner!
Went for a cheeky ask after a month of having the Platinum. Have spent approx £5k in that month. Initially got offered 50k points, then downgraded to 35k as the agent said it had been a “typo”. Thought it was my lucky day, though m still pleasantly surprised that I got 35k.
Was just given 35,000 MR points just for asking if there was a retention offer via chat. My fee is due next month and the retention bonus makes the Platinum fee worthwhile.
I put most of my spend on my BAPP card so don’t think it’s based on spend. I notice that some higher spenders seem to be offered 50k so YMMV.
Just got 50k on Chat after asking. I asked yesterday and was told no so this was a hail mary before I cancelled the card so very pleased with the result – got my card in December and recevied the 80k upgrade bonus 3 days ago so a fairly succesful few months…
35k, after being refused in November and if anything reduced my spend since then (less than 1k in 2 months). Will be a good boy and stay for a year.

How did you manage 2 retentions within a year? I had one during summer and when I called today they said that I already had one and normally retentions resets every 12 months.

Well, that’s very annoying… my timeline and usage is almost exactly the same: signed up in Dec 2023 and spent >£25k. Asked for my first retention bonus today and computer says no. I’ll be holding on until my 25k bonus and will give retentions another go closer to that time.
I did cancel a BA card in the interim (was also offered no retention there too).

I don’t know, I just asked chat. Although I had a gold card for 3 years before I upgrade to Platinum.

Reports would suggest that those who took up the jumbo welcome offer in late 23 / early 24 have been particularly favourably treated and the same is happening for those who only signed up in November 24 but are already getting retention offers of up to 75k! Bonkers but true.
