I’ve tried to be a bit cheeky and hint at a Retention offer, earlier than I normally would.
However I got offered a Downgrade offer to the Gold.
Also I got confirmation that the Harvey Nichols benefit will be “decommissioned and end by July 1, 2025”.
Coming up to first annual renewal so asked about retention offers. Told only the ‘switch’ to Gold was showing on my account. I already hold a business Plat so decided to go ahead with the downgrade, given the fee-free first year.
Only spent c. £12k on the card in the year. Got the 40k SUB and £400 travel credit plus 5k for supp card and utilised £250 worth of dining credit, £100 Harvey Nics along with another £200 cashback from Virgin spend. Should get a rebate of c. 2 months’ fee so total cost for these benefits is about £550. Overall not very profitable customer for Amex so no surprise I wasn’t offered anything…

I’m not really sure what a profitable customer for Amex would be. They prevent you from putting any overseas spend on the card (with the 3% charge), charge a huge amount of interest if you don’t pay it off immediately, so lose that business and don’t incentivize you to spend domestically, with a 1MR to £1 ratio. Seems the most profitable way to use a Plat Amex is to pay the £650 and put the card in a drawer – using it only for dining credits.

25K MRP for £5K spent in three months was the offer…

Was offered 10k MRP for £1k spend in the next three months… quite disappointed I must say

How is it best to approach Amex with renewal / retention?
They must know everyone is out for these type of deals so do you just come out with it and ask what offers are in place or do you have to go through the motions and say you are going to cancel and be willing to follow through with it?

Use online chat. Simply say your deciding whether to cancel or not, as your not sure your getting any value out of your card. Ask if there are any offers available that may help in your decision. There either will or won’t be and take it from there. If your happy accept, if not say you need to think about it and then decide in your own time.

You seem to be referring to a BAPP retention offer here.
10k MR for GBP 1k spend over chat after an earlier retention offer at the start of the year. Renewal fee hit since.

This is me too. However I was accepted for an offer far earlier than the last two years, when at this point previously, I have been bluntly told there was nothing on my account…. I usually get my retention offer in mid September for a renewal of first week in October.
So I’ll be asking again days before renewal or going to Gold. If they’ll throw these offers a few times over the year, then it’s not a bad thing. But not quite the glory days and just throwing 35-50-75-100k at you for nothing.
Similar to the last few responses. Just coming up to the end of my first year with my Platinum card, second year with Amex. Total spend on the card for the year is £50k. Requested a retention offer via chat – 25,000MR points for £5K spend in 3 months.
Cancelled after 3 years with Platinum. With the loss of HN and not travelling to countries with no dining benefit next year, seems pointless. Will probably re-apply in 2 years if there is a decent sub.
