I have a return flight booked from LHR-SYD, 1 person using Cabin Upgrade Voucher (Business). Flying out tomorrow.
I am needing to return earlier than the booked Inbound date & therefore will be regularly checking for availability – my question is, if a lower cabin becomes available, can I downgrade to book that flight? I don’t really care whether the Avios/Cash part is refundable – just want to know if it’s an option or does the return categorically have to be the same class?
You can fly the 2 legs in different cabins. BA should be able to amend the booking for you over the phone for £35 if availability comes up. (Don’t ask to downgrade the return leg as that will probably confuse the agent, say you want to amend the date and return in premium economy, if applicable).

Thank you for your reply, I knew it was possible to fly and return in different classes, but I was thrown by the Cabin Upgrade Voucher forcing the same class for both legs (understandably) – but I guess BA customer service would treat each leg like a normal Avios booking with the usual change options available.
Thank you for clearing that up, I’m glad it’s as simple as hoped!
