Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Executive Club Qatar Airways Nightmare with Luggage

  • 47 posts

    Hello,

I recently came back from Kuala Lumpur on Qatar Qsuite, I asked live chat how much allowance I get and they said 40kg each and when I got to the check in desk they told me that was incorrect and actually only 40kg total. I tried to dispute this but they gave me no option but to pay around £350 for the extra 11kg. The check in desk people were more or less useless and didnt want to hear it. Even one of the ‘supervisors’ were saying that ‘they’re not the same’ as if the live chat isn’t supposed to represent Qatar Airways. I will file a chargeback with my credit card or has anyone else experienced this / any other effective options I have (except contacting QR which I will do so anyway).

Unbelievable, 40 kg per person is standard.

Unless you were travelling business lite

Seems like that was the class I was booked into in hindsight but my main problem is the fact that I was told by Qatar that it was each and check in charging me £350 with not a pinch of understanding that I was told different

I always take a screenshot from the airline website unless I’m totally confident (and it’s also usually on an email confirmation), but it seems to say Business Lite gets 40 kg here?

It’s a slightly odd story in that your luggage allowance will have been shown on your e-ticket as a required field and if that stated 40kg each, it should have been sufficient evidence for the check-in agent. Chargeback doesn’t seem the ideal route to resolve this and if it’s against the excess baggage charge might be problematic. You anyway need to attempt to resolve with QR first. This shouldn’t be difficult once you have the evidence of the e-ticket to support your case or confirm QR was correct. The potential misinformation via chat isn’t a particularly useful argument.

It actually says nothing about business lite, just a heading with no figures

What it says on a website doesn’t really matter as the allowance is based on the individual ticket/trip and can be different to that of another passenger booked with the same booking class on the same flight.

It can depend on whether one pax is flying point to point or on connecting flights when there might even be a mix of classes or mix of piece system/weight on the different flights or special ticket conditions that increase or reduce baggage allowance, an upgraded ticket not having the higher allowance, plus of course status that might affect it.

A check-in agent should be automatically provided with the right allowance for each passenger rather than basing it on any general cabin allowance which is why the original post seems a little odd.

So on the email it did say 40kg but sometimes I am a bit confused with how qatar displays their baggage allowance, nonetheless I wanted to confirm with live chat what it was to which they said yes and to be charged at the airport and where more or less the check in staff were dicks about it was not a nice experience at all.

They did say on their side it does say 40kg total and that they couldn’t do anything about it, I either repacked, got rid of the items or don’t board the flight

Find your electronic ticket receipt. If you don’t have it (it isn’t always sent when you make a booking) ask the live chat to send it to you by email. It may be too late as you have already flown though.

The e-ticket receipt will clearly say the baggage allowance on the left hand side. It is a PDF file which looks like the one here: https://suitesmile.com/blog/2022/01/02/qatar-airways-ticket-flexibility-further-extended-to-30-sep-2022/

There is a different file for each passenger.

@Garethgerry – did you click on that link on a phone? On laptop it definitely states 40 kg under “Business Lite”. But as noted, correct baggage allowance will be on email/e-ticket.

Clearly states 40kg total on that link. You only got yourself to blame. Learn from it and move on.

That’s very unfair. Being told go home or unnecessarily pay £350 is hardly something to chalk up to experience and move on.

I clicked on link on a Samsung tablet, which showed nothing for business lite.

Clearly qatar owe you your money back. You must exhaust the process of claiming with qatar. Before going down another route. Doubt if credit card will pay back, you paid too much which is different to paying and not getting goods. Worth a try. Next would be mcol or arbitration.

It also states on https://www.qatarairways.com/en/baggage/allowance.html that “A single piece of checked baggage should weigh no more than 32kg”

At the top of the page, I also see the mention of 40kg.

It is a bit confusing, maybe Qatar mean you are allowed one bag at 32 kg max, and then another bag with a few kg to take you up to 40 kg?

    That’s precisely what they mean.

What’s very odd about this thread, is that the OP hasn’t actually said there was a second passenger – everyone has assumed there is/was. We don’t know whether ‘each’ refers to each case or each passenger.

The critical information will be on the e-ticket(s) and absent knowing what is stated there, no particular course of action (now ranging from walk away to MCOL) can or should be recommended.

The story and the confusion makes more sense for a solo traveller, but who knows.

This is the key piece of missing info; is the OP talking about 40kg each bag weight OR 40 Kg each passenger. In my experience QR business class is always 40KG each passenger and never each piece of baggage. With 7 sectors booked for next 45 days for various family members I am quite certain of 40KG each passenger part.

QR check in staff do not give away even 1kg extra in my experience. Really strict! On my parents flight last year they were two kg more than the allowance and staff wanted extra payment. Luckily i put the bag on the check in next to us and it came at the right weight. I had to ask for a supervisor to check this discrepancy and then they relented. This was UC paid via avios.
