I have got flights booked later this year via Qatar airways. Currently I have 55,000 AMEX points which I can convert to Avios on 1:1.
I’ve noticed that Qatar airways charges for seat selection and as there are 7 passengers, that adds up to quite a bit.
So was hoping to use my Amex points to pay for the seats.
Am I right in saying I will to convert Amex points into Avios and then convert into Qatar privilege points?
Aand if that’s correct, anyone know if it’s efficient buying seat upgrades using my points? How much are they worth in money, 1 point = 1p?
Thank you
Qatar doesn’t use their Privilege points anymore, everything is Avios. You should be able to log in to your booking via MMB and it will tell you how much seat selection is, including cash + Avios. I suspect it won’t be a particularly great rate.

Thanks. What’s MMB?
When I log into Qatar airways, it doesnt give me an option to pay via Avios for seat selection. Which I why I presumed they have to be converted to Qatar privilege.

MMB = Manage My Booking
When I go and pay, there is no option to my existing points.
Okay, perhaps you need to have the Avios in your account to have an option to pay with them.
But I do have points already on my account. Yes its not all my balance but I wanted double check this before I swap all my 55,000 Amex to Avios.
Are the avios in your BA account or QR account? If BA, try moving them to QR first.
Yes that’s worked. So back to my original post, as mentioned you do have to convert them from BA to Qatar points.
Doing a small conversion, 500 points is saving me £3. Which is working out 1 point to every 0.6p.
What’s everyone thought? Looks low the conversation rate.
As mentioned, it’s rarely a good deal to use avios for something like this.
It depends on whether you’d have a better use for them, but you should be able to get at least 1p per avios of value when using them to book an award flight.
Ok thanks, I will have a look into my options.
Also some reward flights don’t appear that great to be honest.
Heathrow to JFK flight is £430 return in May. Using the Awards flight finder this same flight is £202 plus 675000 points.

I really hope that is a typoe – I’m getting two people to Australia and back from the UK in business for less points than that…

Yes sorry a typo, it’s 67500 points.
Ah – do you qualify for RFS pricing (you need some activity on your BA account over a period of time I can’t recall now?!)
With RFS: Off-peak, one-way to JFK should be 25,000 avios in economy, 42,500 in PE and 80,000 in CW. This isn’t the best example, however, as you’ll get much better value on less competitive routes where cash prices are much higher.

Not much activity in my BA account at the moment.
The issue I have with award flights is the best ones are off peak, and with having 2 children this really isn’t an option due to school.
