Separate MR point account created for second card

I already had Amex rewards card with around 30K MR points, and now I have opened a new gold card, I was expecting the new gold card to link to the existing MR points account but to my surprise a separate MR points account has been created for new gold card with 0 MR points in it.

This did not happen last time when I opened Amex rewards card alongside my platinum card. Before cancelling the platinum card I opened the rewards card to preserve my MR points and both card linked to the same MR account.

I contacted Amex chat support and they have created a request to link the two MR accounts, I was told that during application I should have had an option to use existing MR points account, but I looked at my application screenshots and there was no option related to MR points.

Yes, it happens. Also never seen such an option during application.
It takes a while for the MR accounts to merge but it eventually gets done.

How did you register your new card? Under the same American Express online services account? And the same email address is on both cards? It shouldn’t have happened.

On the positive side, there is a chance that you would have got the sign-up bonus on Gold by having two separate MR accounts once you hit the spend target, even though you don’t qualify ….

I was also wondering if that will be the case, but not sure how to confirm that I will be eligible for gold card sign up bonus even though I hold other cards.

I did register the new card under the same online account which has my other cards added.

I have foolishly asked CS to link the two MR accounts so not sure if this will now impact any potential sign-up bonus.

I was wondering if anyone else in a similar situation managed to get the sign-up bonus on the second card?

If I remember correctly, I applied through a referral link (my partner) and it was 40,000 MR points bonus for a £3000 spend in 3 months.

I did, when I got Plat Business a few years ago despite already having personal Plat, and setting up a new MR account for it. Still allows me to get 2 lots of 90k referral points each year.

I added the new card to my existing online servicing account.

Ames chat support asked me to link the two MR accounts and have told me that it will take 7-10 working days. So, not sure if this will have any impact on the sign-up bonus.

No, mine were kept totally separate – different email address, different online servicing account with a different log-in and therefore a different MR account.
