    – Shanghai is perhaps one city in China where guides are less essential to facilitate exploration but we have used Bespoke in Shanghai and elsewhere in China and found them to be really excellent. They aren’t necessarily cheap, but they have the very best guides and work with the best suppliers. This is the gold standard.

An alternative company is Travel China Guide which is good and less expensive but you get a slightly different calibre of guide. They are very responsive and helpful.

I would be happy to use either firm, but it rather depends what you want to do, how much you know already and just how knowledgeable you need/want your guide to be.

There has been a huge amount of work restoring the Hongkou area and for us, that’s possibly more interesting than the French Concession which is maybe the most popular guided tour. The Securities Museum in the former Astor Hotel will give you a great idea of the city in its historic heyday as will Paul French’s book City of Devils.

A trip to Xinchang Ancient Town, c.45 mins from Pudong is well worth the visit.

The Shanghai Art Museum, in the Expo pavilion has an amazing collection of paintings of Shanghai from c. 1850 onwards.

Thanks @JDB. This is great and have enquired with both to explore their offerings.
